Environmental Health and Safety-Training-Classes

The Florida Department of Health, F.A.C. 64E-16, requires any personnel who works in a Biological Safety Level 2 laboratory or in a laboratory which generates any solid or liquid waste presenting a threat of infection to humans to have Biomedical Waste Training.

This training is given along with the Bloodborne Pathogen Training.

Definitions of Biomedical Waste/Regulated Waste
Facility policies and procedures of mixed waste
Labeling, storage and containment of regulated waste
Enforcement and penalties involved in the regulation

Anyone who may have an occupational exposure to human blood, body fluid, tissues or human cell lines must receive this training, as required by the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.

This training is given along with the Biomedical Waste training.

Topics covered include:

Epidemiology, symptoms and the modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens
FSU's exposure control plan
Hepatitis B vaccine, its efficacy, safety and method of administration
Methods to prevent or minimize occupational exposure
Post-exposure procedures and medical evaluations

Biosafety Level 2 and Above Laboratory Training

All laboratory personnel who will be working in or who will have access to a Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2), Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3), or an Animal Biological Safety Level 2 (ABSL-2) laboratory must receive general training for working in these biosafety level laboratory facilities. This training is based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Guidelines for Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL).

General biological safety issues associated with these biosafety level laboratory facilities
Different general practices and procedures necessary to prevent a potential exposure to the infectious agents being used in these biosafety level laboratories
Information regarding the appropriate disposal of biohazardous waste generated in these biosafety level laboratories

Chemical Safety Training

Hazard Communication/Right-to-Know Training

Employers must provide information and training to their employees about the hazardous chemicals to which they may be exposed in the workplace.

Laboratory employees are required to receive this training on an annual basis, while other employees receive it on a biennial schedule.

This training is required by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.

Hazardous Waste Awareness Training

The Refresher for this training is available online.

This training is required on an annual basis for anyone who generates or has the potential to generate hazardous waste. Hazardous Waste Awareness Training is mandated under EPA regulation 40 CFR 265.

Fire Safety Training

All employees of the University shall receive this training.

Industrial Hygiene Training

Asbestos Awareness Training

Anyone in the Facilities O&M or Building Services Departments that may work with or around Asbestos-Containing Building Materials (ACBM) should attend this course on an annual basis to learn of the multiple locations of potential asbestos health hazards that exist at FSU.

This training is a requirement of OSHA's Hazard Communication Program and the Asbestos Standard.

It is typically scheduled to last two hours.

Warning signs and notifications

Reporting real or potential emergencies

Asbestos Awareness Training for Building Occupants

This training is intended to provide a general overview of asbestos containing materials, associated hazards and how FSU manages those materials to ensure building occupants are not exposed to asbestos fibers.

Confined Space Training

This training is designed for FSU employees who work or may work in confined spaces or permit-required confined spaces.

Hazardous Energy Control (Lockout/Tagout) Training

This training is offered to all FSU employees that conduct work that involves lockout/tagout, assisting with a lockout/tagout operation, or will be in an area where lockout/tagout is being done.

Hearing Conservation Training

This training is designed to educate you about FSU’s efforts to protect employees working in environments that generate noise at levels that can potentially result in hearing loss. Discover the simple steps you should take to protect your hearing and that are available to you.

N95 Respirator Training

This N95 filtering facepiece respirator training is for employees who are required to use them for protection against inhalation hazards of airborne aerosols.

Portable Ladder Safety Training

The training covers the selection, inspection, maintenance, use and storage of step ladders, straight ladders, extension ladders and variations of portable utility ladders.

Laboratory Safety Training

Demonstration on the Use of Laboratory Safety Equipment

This module provides you with three brief video demonstrations on the correct use of eye washes, safety showers and fume hoods.

Dry Ice Safety Training

Anyone who works with or around Dry Ice is required to take this course. The training covers the safe handling, storage and disposal of Dry Ice.

Physical and health hazards of chemicals in the laboratory
Methods to reduce employee exposure to chemicals

Lab Safety for your Research

An EH&S staff person will come to your laboratory or department to address questions specific to your research protocols. We will review with you the use of chemicals and biohazardous and radioactive materials in your laboratory, and discuss how you can protect yourself and members of your lab from exposures; how to handle spills; appropriate disposal of wastes; chemical storage issues; and answer any questions you might have. Anesthetic Gas Safety Training

Halothane and isoflurane are used as anesthetics for research animals undergoing various medical procedures. During the procedures, small amounts of these gases may leak from the vaporizer equipment in surgical suites, potentially exposing researchers performing surgeries and other procedures. It is important that researchers are aware of the risks associated with potential exposure to these anesthetic gases. The Anesthetic Gas Safety Training is mandated for all researchers administering halothane or isoflurane to research animals outside of the fume hood.

One-time training is required by Environmental Health and Safety, Laboratory Animal Resources, and the Animal Care and Use Committee.

Radiation Safety Training

Radiation Safety Short Course

Anyone working with or around radioactive materials or radiation producing devices should attend this course.

It is offered at least once a semester. Sessions are typically scheduled to last two hours per week for three weeks.

Online Xray Training

This X-Ray training is intended to meet the regulatory requirements for users of academic x-ray systems (diffraction, florescence, computed tomography, etc.) This online training does not meet the regulatory requirements for those who work with radioactive materials (radioisotopes, crystals, RIA kits).

Red Cross Training

EH&S offers initial and annual refresher courses for several American Red Cross courses. Classes are open to all University employees to learn about responding to an emergency situation, CPR, and providing first aid. Class time and length varies depending on the course. A minimum of 10 participants are required to conduct a class.
