FSU News FSU jazz great Scotty Barnhart pens definitive history of jazz trumpet by Libby Fairhurst Jazz great Scotty Barnhart has given fellow jazz lovers and history buffs alike the season's perfect gift. It's all wrapped up in "The World of Jazz Trumpet: A Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy," his just-published book deemed definitive by peers and bursting with inside stories on the legendary geniuses of the genre. Scotty Barnhart
The Florida State University assistant professor of jazz studies—a principal soloist for The Count Basie Orchestra—has recorded alongside Wynton Marsalis; played muted solos behind Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and Cab Calloway; performed at Carnegie Hall with pianist Marcus Roberts; and led his own quintet at major jazz festivals and night clubs worldwide. A first-of-its-kind retrospective by a seasoned professional, "The World of Jazz Trumpet" is also the first book by the acclaimed performer, composer, arranger, clinician and FSU artist-in-residence. In it, Barnhart spans the gamut of jazz styles from its New Orleans beginnings to swing, bop, hard bop, free jazz and beyond. He shares his groundbreaking interviews with 15 jazz trumpet pioneers such as Marsalis, Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard and Maynard Ferguson, who in turn share their own anecdotes on jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and many more. The 320-page tome will hit bookstores Dec. 20 boasting never-before-seen photos of Sinatra, Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie and others snapped by Barnhart himself, plus how-to trumpet tips straight from the lips of the greatest masters. It also features the first history of women jazz trumpeters ever written. "Professor Barnhart's book on the history of jazz trumpet is a genuinely remarkable achievement," said FSU College of Music Dean Don Gibson. "His comprehensive up-close view of the history and development of jazz through the work of the great jazz trumpet artists already has been characterized as the definitive study of its kind. We are delighted to have "The World of Jazz Trumpet" linked to FSU's outstanding program in jazz studies." Barnhart will sign copies of his book Dec. 7, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in FSU's Opperman Hall, Room 230 on Copeland Street; and from 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at Borders on Apalachee Parkway. The free events are open to the public and will include performances by the author and other FSU jazz faculty. Later in December and in early 2006, Barnhart and publisher Hal Leonard will host book signings in, among other places, Los Angeles, New York City's Lincoln Center and Washington, D.C. |
