Letter President Talbot D'Alemberte June 26, 1997 Dear Veterans and Veterans' Families: I am writing to invite you to join the Florida State University in a singularly important project, one designed to safeguard the memory of your generation's sacrifices on behalf of the United States and freedom throughout the world. The Department of History at F.S.U. has established the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. This program has as its exclusive goal the collection and preservation of the letters, diaries, photos, and other memorabilia which reflect the attitudes and concerns of men and women from all branches of the service. With all the Resources of a major public institution of higher learning F.S.U. has committed itself to serving the state and the nation by guaranteeing the conservation in perpetuity of these irreplaceable insights into the soul of our country. With professional staff and renowned faculty already in place, this university can assure all donors that their contributions of letters, photos, diaries, and such will remain available to themselves and their families, as well as to the professional historian, for all time. Most significantly, besides being conserved, they will be organized and concentrated in such a way as to facilitate the passing on to future generations knowledge of the impact of World War II on American society and culture. Your donation of your memories will likewise assist in the yet to completed task of writing the history of World War II "from the ground up." While there are whole libraries on the major campaigns and generals of World War II, the hopes and struggles of the average man and woman have still not been adequately chronicled. The "Willies and Joes" and "Roses the Riveter" have yet to receive their due recognition in the history of that last "Good War." This enormously important social history can only be written with your help. Please, consider donating your memorabilia to F.S.U. or designating in your will their transfer in the future. Thank you for your invaluable assistance in this work of dedication and scholarship. Yours truly, Talbot D'Alemberte
