Radioman 3rd Class William "Rip" Swink explains his "Short Snorter" - "The way it worked was:  When you flew a plane to a new island, you gave the first three guys you saw a dollar each and they would sign the paper currency of the island and give it to you .  Every island you went to, you added currency and signatures to your Short Snorter. 

In a bar, if someone saw your wings and ribbons, he could ask if you were a Short Snorter.  If yes, you showed your Snorter (the longer the more impressive) and everything was OK, but if you didn't have it with you, you had to buy him a drink."
