SELECTED SOURCES IN WOMEN'S STUDIES

SCOPE

The purpose of this guide is to identify some basic reference sources in Women's Studies. The FSU Libraries own many more materials than can be listed here. Please ask for assistance if you have difficulty locating relevant library sources for your research.

FINDING BOOKS

Use LUIS or WebLUIS, the FSU Libraries' online catalog, to locate specific titles (t=  ) or works by a specific author (a=  ), or to search for subjects (s=  ). LUIS may be accessed from computers in each of the libraries on campus, and also via the Internet. The subject headings used in LUIS are from the Library of Congress Subject Headings list, a copy of which is available on each floor of the Libraries.  Examples of relevant subject headings are listed below. It is also possible to use keyword searching (k= ) in LUIS. Please ask at a service desk if you need more information on searching LUIS.

ELECTRONIC INDEXES AND FULL-TEXT RESOURCES

There are a number of indexes and full-text resources relevant to research in women's studies available. in LUIS or WebLUIS (http://www.fcIa.edu/ ). Among the databases available are General Academic Index, Business Index, FirstSearch, RLIN and Citadel Files, Dialog@CARL, and LEXIS-NEXIS Universe. Most full-text resources require that you have a web browser to access them. 'Mere are also several indexes available on the FSU Libraries' LAN. For additional information about electronic sources available, check at a service desk.

FINDING PERIODICALS
To identity and locate periodicals and journals in women's studies owned by the FSU Libraries, search LUIS for specific titles (tj= ) or search under specific subjects using the subheading periodicals (e.g., s=feminism--periodicals; s= womens studies--periodicals). Another way to search is by keyword (k= and periodical format (fint=per) (e.g., k=feminism and fmt=per; or k=women? and fmt=per). For additional help in locating periodicals, ask at a service desk.
 
 

USEFUL MAJOR MICROFORM SETS

Gerritsen collection of women's history. Film 4256; Mif 458 Guide:  Doc  Ref  HQI 121 G47 1983 
A comprehensive international library of over 4,700 titles--books, pamphlets and periodicals--recording the intellectual, political, legal, economic, and social history of women and feminism from antiquity to the twentieth century. (Film 4526 and MIF 458). Hard copy guide to this collection. 

Herstory: women's history collection.   Film 5425 Guide: Doc Ref Z 7963 H5 H47 
Microfilm Collection. Berkeley, Calif. Women's History Research Center. Library has 1971 to date. Contains women's serial literature from the International Women's History Periodical Archive assembled in 1978 by the Women's History Research Center. This Collection includes newsletters, journals and newspapers published by and about women's liberation, civic, professional, religious and peace groups. Most of the material was published between 1968 and 1974; but some titles date back to 1956. The literature constitutes a detailed record of contemporary feminism.

New Haven, Conn.: Research Publications, 1975. One of the largest and most comprehensive collections of primary source materials for the study of women's history.  An interdisciplinary collection of printed books, pamphlets, periodicals, manuscripts, and photographs.  Much of the collection is drawn from the two major women's history libraries: The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, Radcliffe College (special focus on women's role in the American crusade for social justice) and the Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College (focus on the social and intellectual history of women since 1795). The collection also includes material from: The Ida Rust Macpherson Collection on women in the westward movement; the Jane Addams Memorial Collection, U. of Illinois' Chicago Circle, on women in the Midwest and in social reform movements; The Miriam Y. Holden and Galatea Collections on Medieval and European women; and supplementary materials from the New York Public Library, the Widener Library at Harvard, and the Yale University Libraries. Women and health collection:  Film 5428   Guide: Doc

Women's History Research Center, Inc., 1974. This collection presents a unique record of women and the health care system. Over 150 files contain clippings, articles, pamphlets, essays and papers on the socialization of children and health care in other countries and on the sexual, psychological and physical results of restrictive sex roles. Additional material covers every aspect of the national health care controversy. Materials were assembled between 1968 and 1974.

Special Subject Units from Sex Research: Early Literature, from Statistics to Erotica   Film 9255
This collection of nearly 1,000 definitive and rare titles from 1700-1860 covers a spectrum of topics including rape, incest, celibacy, prostitution, extramarital sex, homosexuality, sex offenses, divorce, veneral diseases, reproduction, adultery, anticlericalism, birth control, the status of women, and immoral effects of music, theatre, and dancing. The collection is divided into four basic subject areas: sex and literature; sexual behavior and attitudes; sex, law, and medicine; and sex and the humanities. The collection facilitates research and includes social history books, guidebooks to cities, dictionaries, art books, romances, poetry, epistolary novels, and trial accounts -- all from the Alfred C. Kinsey Institure for Sex Research at Indiana University.

To identify and locate microforms owned by the FSU Libraries and useful in women's studies research, search LUIS for specific titles (t=  ) or search under specific subjects or keywords using the format command (fmt=mic) (e.g., k=women? and fmt=mic).
