YOUNG SCHOLARS HEAD TO FSU TO EXPLORE THE SCIENCES

Forty of Florida’s brightest high school students with a common interest in math, science and computer science are visiting Florida State University to participate in FSU’s Young Scholars Program. The students were scheduled to be on the FSU campus from June 15 through July 26.

The program is co-directed by Robin Smith, assistant director at FSU’s Office of Science Teaching Activities. Smith’s goal is to maintain a high level of interest in math and science among Florida’s top students through problem solving and applying what they learn.

Acceptance into the program requires that students have completed the eleventh grade in Florida, have earned at least a “B” average in academic courses and have scored in the 90th percentile or better in science or mathematics on a nationally standardized exam.

Once accepted, students will have the opportunity to conduct research in biology, physics, chemistry, oceanography, meteorology, geology, nutrition, engineering or political science while being accompanied by faculty mentors and professors. The projects, curriculum and formal coursework provided for the scholars are designed to encourage students to explore these areas as possible college and career options.
