The award was presented to D’Alemberte in Coral Gables, Fla., at the organization’s annual meeting earlier this month. D’Alemberte was honored for his leadership in helping to develop alternative dispute resolution in the United States. He chaired the American Bar Association’s first committee on dispute resolution. During his tenure, the committee developed model programs around the country, encouraged courses in dispute resolution at law schools and other schools and conducted several national conferences. He put his knowledge of dispute resolution to work when he was selected by the states of Alabama, Florida and Georgia to mediate a water dispute in the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint River Basin, a proceeding that allowed the states to continue their efforts to abandon their dispute for several years. A former president of the American Bar Association (1991-92), D’Alemberte served as dean of the FSU College of Law from 1984 to 1989 and president of Florida State University from 1994 to 2003. He represented Dade County in the Florida House of Representatives from 1966 to 1972. After leaving the Florida Legislature, he chaired the Florida Commission on Ethics (1974-75) and the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (1977-78). During his time as a practicing attorney, D’Alemberte concentrated on media and public law work. ### |
