The undergraduate research alliance will serve to connect students who want a research experience with faculty members who wish to supervise research projects with undergraduates. Research projects can be student initiated for those who have in mind an area of interest or they may be faculty research projects. Options for research experience include those that are voluntary, paid or for credit. This service is open to all undergraduates. |
Honors in the Major:
Upper level students may do Honors in the Major work, which is two-to-three semesters of independent research and/or creative work, leading to a written thesis, and guided by a major professor and two other faculty members.
Directed Individual Study (DIS):Students may enroll in courses directed by an instructor for individual study of a particular area. (Defined here by the school of Information Studies).
Research
Experiences for Undergraduates (REU):The National Science Foundation makes possible a number of opportunities for undergraduates to join research projects at FSU and other universities each summer. These positions are paid, full-time, and involve working closely with faculty, post-docs, and graduate assistants on a specific research project.
Internships:Internships are single-semester, paid or unpaid, major-related work experiences designed to help students understand the "real world" applications of their academic studies. Involvement may be part- or full-time and during Summer, Fall, or Spring semesters. Academic credit may be awarded at the discretion of students' academic departments.
Community
Action Research:Students may do hands-on research within the community in order to learn about and facilitate ways to improve the community. This might take the form of a DIS or Honors in the Major project, an internship, a service-learning course, or a volunteer opportunity such as those offered through FSU's Center for Civic Education and Service.
