Through the ages, universities have been places where faculty and students collaborate to discover new phenomena and advance our knowledge base. At FSU we want to maintain the tradition of faculty and students jointly engaged in the discovery process.

In the early 1900's, John Dewey, America's best-known philosopher-educator, believed in inquiry-based learning, where students would learn to pursue their own answers and at the same time develop resourcefulness, adaptability, social responsibility, and a sense of confidence when faced with intellectual and professional challenges.

Participation in this kind of learning is not limited to graduate students or only students majoring in the sciences. At Florida State, courses across the curriculum provide the opportunity for success through discovery-based methods.
    Opportunities include:
  • service learning
  • internships
    • Internships are single-semester, paid or unpaid, major-related work experiences designed to help students understand the "real world" applications of their academic studies. Involvement may be part- or full-time and during Summer, Fall, or Spring semesters
  • Honors in the Major
    • Honors in the Major offers talented juniors and seniors the opportunity to undertake significant independent and original scholarship under the guidance of faculty members of their own choosing.
  • student research
What is essential is that all students have the opportunity to explore and make meaningful discoveries in collaboration with faculty mentors, graduate students and peers.
