IntroductionThe professional literature indicates that many high performing schools thrive because they make effective use of volunteers for such purposes as tutoring, mentoring, and the assistance of classroom teachers in non-instructional tasks. Our pilot school had very few volunteers, and most teachers felt overwhelmed with the burden of non-instructional responsibilities. Thus, the staff of the truancy project targeted the establishment of an infrastructure of involved community partners. This infrastructure included the identification and training of an existing school volunteer to take leadership in this endeavor. Numerous community partner businesses and organizations were recruited. The following businesses committed to provide material and financial resources to the school: Community Participants. Other organizations committed to provide volunteer personnel. In order to make volunteering more efficient, we developed a volunteer chart that organized all volunteer activities in terms of task, time commitment, and contact person.
