Employment Opportunities

Interviewers

The FSU Survey Research Laboratory employs approximately 50-100 interviewers on both part-time and full-time schedules.  The majority of the interviewers are undergraduate or graduate students at FSU, FAMU, or TCC.  Lucrative bonus and incentive plans are offered to encourage quality service and extended tenure.  Many interviewers work at the lab throughout their undergraduate and graduate terms.

Supervisors

Supervisors are selected from the pool of interviewers once they acquire sufficient experience and knowledge to train and manage newer interviewers.  Once promoted, supervisors are given the opportunity to acquire human resource management skills and to work within their career specialities.  In the past, supervisors have had the opportunity to specialize in Social Science Research, Marketing Research, Public Relations, Desktop and Internet Publishing, and Computer Networking (Novell).

Statistical and Analytical Staff

The statistical and Analytical staff is drawn from the pool of graduate students at Florida State University.  Generally these positions are filled with doctoral candidates in the Social Sciences who have completed all degree requirements except the defense of their dissertation.  These students are extensively trained in econometrics, formal theory, strategic analysis, and social science research techniques.  In addition, the statistical staff is required to complete a minimum of 3 graduate level research methods courses and have a strong working knowledge of SPSS, SAS, and most office software applications.  Most of the statistical staff have completed the special summer training program in social science research methods provided by the Inter-University Consortium on Political and Social Research, at the University of Michigan.

The statistical staff analyzes and reports the results of surveys.  Results can be reported in a wide range of formats, ranging from simple cross-tabular and descriptive statistics to more sophisticated multiple regression techniques.  The statistical staff can also prepare presentations, manage and manipulate the data, and write full analytical reports on the results.
