the Shah of Iran.
A number of complete copies of important Bibles in this collection, include the following:
* a first edition, second issue 1611 King James Bible, known as the "She" Bible
* an early Erasmus Paraphrase of the New Testament (1548-49) rebacked by George Baer, a master bookbinder who
managed to reproduce the original spine impression with an especially beautiful cover
* a 1550 Stephanus New Testament with elegant Greek type.
*Froben's "Poor Man's Bible (1491) noted for its portable octavo size, not its cost
The collection also includes important works of Protestant Humanism
Case #1 History and Biography
The importance of the Scots to the development of North American Protestant theology and social values is represented
in the Scottish collection through histories of faith, churches and churchmen. "What Egypt is to the man who would ransack
temples and tombs, so Scotland is to the man who would study the manifestations of ecclesiastical life."Cunningham (below).

This first edition is an author signed presentation copy dedicated to Rev. Gavin Lang Pagan, the minister of St. George's
Parish, Edinburgh, who enlisted as a private infantry soldier and was killed in France in WWI.

#4 Woodrow, Marion W. Dr. James Woodrow as Seen by His Friends; Character Sketches by his Former Pupils,
Colleagues, and Associates. Part I. Columbia, SC: 1909. (Also on display: signed letter from President Woodrow Wilson
to his aunt, Felie Woodrow Clark, who signed this presentation copy to Mr. John Shaw. Mr. Shaw placed this title with
its enclosures in the Scottish Collection.)
#5 Nicoll, W. Robertson. Princes of the Church. 5th ed. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1921. Tributes to 34 prominent Scottish churchmen written between 1889 and 1921. Enclosed in this book is a fragile transcription of a sermon on the greatest churchmen of the 19th century preached on November 8th, 1931 by The Rev. Dr. Charles J. Vaughan, Master of the Temple and Dean o f Llandaff.
#6 How, Frederick Douglas. Bishop Walsham How: A Memoir. London: 1899, Isbister and Co., Ltd., 1899. Dedicated to
her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, this is a son's tribute to his father who was the first Bishop
of Wakefield.
#7 Collins, Rev. G. N. M. Donald Maclean D. D. With foreword by Rev. D. Martyn Lloyd Jones. Edinburgh: Lindsay &
Co, Ltd., 1944. The Rev. Dr. Maclean was editor of The Evangelical Quarterly and Principal of Free Church College.
He was a link between British and Continental Evangelical Protestants, and played a prominent part in the troubles and
controversies of the Church in Scotland (1900-1906).
The MacGregor Collection (early Americana) and the George M. Harper William Blake Collection, along with the
extensive collections of John M. Shaw, are a tremendous resource for those who are interested in the role of religion in
society, particularly in Protestant history.
Cases #2 and #3 Hymnals
Hymns are scripture, psalms and moral lessons written in lyrical form and set to music. Many early hymnals printed only the words because the melodies were commonplace, and the printing of music was both difficult and expensive. Below are examples of the many hymnals contained in the SHAW collection.
