LOUISE RICHARDSON HERBAL COLLECTION

Rembert Dodoens, 1517-1585. Frumentorum, leguminum, palustrium, et aquatilium herbarum ac eorum, quae eo pertinent. Antverpiae: Ex officina Christorphori Plantini, 1566. Includes cereals, vegetables, marsh vegetation and water plants. This was the first book by Dodoens printed by Christopher Plantin, and features many beautiful woodcuts by Pieter van der Borcht.

Another noteworthy Richardson collection is a selection of 16th, 17th, and 18th century herbals. These volumes contain descriptions of the variety of plants valued for their medicinal, savory, or aromatic qualities. The collection is strong in the work of early physicians, pharmacists, botanists, and scholarly literature. Among the valuable herbals are Henry Lyte's translation of Rembert Dodoens' New Herbal, or Historie of Plants (London, 1619) and John Gerard's The Herbal, or General History of Plants (London, 1636).
