Edward M. Tidball Civil War Papers
Scope and Content:
Photocopies of the papers of Edward M. Tidball. The collection of nine
items are as listed below:
1. Letter by Navy Department, August 30, 1859, to E.M. Tidball, Esq., Winchester,
Va. Extending his leave of absence one week.
2. Letter by Navy Department, July 10, 1860, to E.M. Tidball, Clerk Bureau
of Ordnance & Hydrography, Washington D.C. Letter granting leave of
absence for one month.
3. Letter by Navy Department, March 6, 1861, to Edward M. Tidball, Esq.,
Late Clerk in the Bureau of Ordnance & Hydrography, Washington D.C.,
accepting Tidball's resignation as Clerk in the Bureau.
4. Letter of Confederate State of America, Navy Department, Montgomery,
Alabama, March 13, 1861 to E.M. Tidball, Esq., Montgomery, Alabama, appointing
Tidball as Chief Clerk "of this Department at a salary of fifteen
hundred dollars per year, and also Disbursing Agent and Corresponding Clerk
of the same at an extra compensation of six hundred dollars per year."
The letter is signed by S.R. Mallory, Secretary of the Navy.
5. Letter by Confederate States of America, Navy Department, Richmond,
Virginia, April 30, 1862, to E.M. Tidball, Esq., Richmond, Va. An appointment
as "Chief Clerk of this Department at a Salary of fifteen hundred
dollars per annum, and also Disbursing Agent and Corresponding Clerk of
the same at an extra compensation of six hundred dollars per annum."
Signed by S.R. Mallory, Secretary of the Navy.
6. "Receipt, from E.M. Tidball. Charlotte, N.C., March 15, 1865 for
the following property lately in possession of the Rebel..." Signed
by Henry Lillibridger, Quartermaster 3rd Brig. 1st Div., 23 Army Corps,
in charge of receiving this class of property.
7. Photocopy of Proclamation by the President of the United States of America.
Dated May 29, 1865, the proclamation was issued to offer amnesty and pardon
to certain persons who had directly or by implication, participated in
the said rebellion...
8. Photocopy of document dated August 29, 1865, by Andrew Johnson, President
of the United States of America, granting full pardon to Edward M. Tidball,
for having taken part in the late rebellion against the Government of the
United States..." (2 pages)
