Confederate States of America - Report of Secretary of War

Scope and Content:
The collection consists of a Report of the Secretary of War, James A. Seddon, dated Richmond, Virginia, April 28, 1864 addressed "To His Excellency Jefferson Davis, President..." and one Confederate States Tax Collector's Receipt, dated Goldsboro, North Carolina, December 7, 1864.
The thirty-seven page report gives an overall picture of the Civil War battlefields up to that date and includes a Report From the Conscription Bureau enumerating the number of men enrolled, number exempt by law and order, number exempt by Board of Examination, conscripts assigned, volunteers assigned, return of deserters to army, increase to army, Ordnance Department, nitre and mining bureau, Quartermaster's Department, Subsistence Department, express company, telegraph company, railroad company, Navy, for the months of December, January, February, and March. This report from the Conscription Bureau covers the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, East Tennessee and Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi, and an overall recapitulation. There is also a "Summary" by John S. Preston, Colonel and Superintendent.
