CAROTHERS MEMORIAL COLLECTION


[Bible Latin] [Mainz: Gutenberg, 1454-1455.] An illuminated leaf printed on both sides, from the original edition of the 42-line Gutenberg Bible printed in Mainz, ca. 1454-55, comprising the last part of chapter 19:23-24, chapters 20-22, 23:1-8 of the Book of Isaiah (O.T.).

The Julia Stover and Milton Washington Carothers Memorial Collection of Bibles and Rare Books, donated by their son Milton S. Carothers, was dedicated on March 7, 1982. Some representative works in the collection include the Taverner-Tyndale Bible (1551); a first edition of the Geneva Bible known as the "Breeches Bible" (1560); a first edition of the Bishops' Bible, known as the "Treacle Bible" (1572); and Jonathan Edwards' A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections (1821).
