Biographical/Historical Note

The Blue Ridge Institute for Southern Community Service Executives was founded in 1927 by Arthur Alden Guild, Director of the Community Fund of Richmond, Virginia. The Institute was conceived for the benefit of voluntarily-supported and public-supported agencies in the health, welfare and youth-serving fields by having their executives meet for discussion of topics that affected their daily work. The avowed purpose was to improve existing leadership and create a desire in communities for better-trained people.

The first session, promoted as "A Vacation Institute for Southern Social Work Executives," was held on August 1-12, 1927, at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. 56 social work executives from 15 states attended. Since then, the Institute has met every year except one - the 1944 session was cancelled due to a polio epidemic in North Carolina. Each institute has been held at the Blue Ridge Assembly, except for the 1943 session, which was held at the Green Park Hotel in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, due to wartime difficulties.

Attendance at the Blue Ridge Institute is by invitation only. The invitation list is developed by the Board of Directors, which is made up of the officers and representatives from each state attending the conference, taking care to ensure broad representation from all service fields. Programs have covered all aspects of community organization and human services, and after the first few years a summary of the institute proceedings and presentations have been published annually.

The Blue Ridge Institute has contributed to the national Health, Welfare, Recreation and Community organization literature on a variety of important subjects. For example, the 1957 proceedings on "Staffing our Community Health, Recreation and Welfare Services" was completely exhausted during the fall of 1957, in preparation of the U.S. Report to the United Nations on the use of personnel. Also, the 1967 proceedings, "The Thrust for Community Betterment - Whose Responsibility?", became the source of information for Public Affairs Pamphlet No. 413 - "New Ways to Better Communities."

The Blue Ridge Institute has been largely nurtured and developed in a unique way by the volunteer services of the Community Service Executives who attended it. In the early years the national association of Community Chests and Councils assisted with some secretarial services and part-time professional consultation. This relationship ceased in 1968 and the institute leadership took over all responsibilities.

Scope and Content

The Blue Ridge Institute for Southern Community Service Executives Collection covers the years 1927-2002, and consists of proceedings, presentations not included in the proceedings, individual reports, programs, photographs, registrations, attendance lists, correspondence, financial reports, planning information, newspaper clippings, and other related materials. The first Institute was held in 1927 and has been held annually at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. The Institute held its 75th session on July 21-26, 2002.

The collection is arranged chronologically by year of the Institute and within each year according to category. The collection is organized into the following series: Blue Ridge History and Information File, Proceedings/Reports, Presentations Not Included in the Proceedings, Reports - Individual, Programs, Registrations, Photographs, Invitation Lists, Mailing Lists, Executive Committee, Correspondence-General, Planning, Background Material, Related Material, Business Meeting-Minutes, and Cross References.

The Blue Ridge History and Information File contains material not connected to one particular year's Institute. It consists of historical background information, Institute subject lists, correspondence relating to the founding of the institute, job descriptions, and related material. Some of the items included in this series are a summary of the Institute's first four sessions by June Purcell Guild, and a master's thesis by Mahmoud E. Sherif that analyzes the Institutes held between 1927-1948.

The Proceedings/Reports series comprises a significant portion of the collection and consists of the text of the various reports presented at each year's institute. The title and author of each individual report is indicated within the collection. The earliest proceedings consisted of individual reports, but the majority of the proceedings were bound into a single booklet presented to attendees each year. Proceedings from the years 1998-2002 were published in audio tape format.

The Presentations Not Included in the Proceedings series includes reports offered at clinics during the Institute, other clinic materials, and the notes of Institute discussion groups. At each Institute, attendees were generally split into 3-5 groups and assigned a discussion topic. The leader of each group generated a report, which was included in the Institute's proceedings.

The Reports-Individual series includes individual copies of reports that appear within the bound proceedings. If the title and author of the report are already provided in the Proceedings series, only the author is indicated within the Reports-Individual series.

The Programs series includes the Institute's official printed program for the specified year, as well as the printed invitations mailed to conference attendees. Some invitations included an additional card that described the lodging options and meal plans available at the Institute.

The Registrations series includes a listing of the names and addresses of the attendees of the Institute for the specified year. It also includes lists of attendees arranged according to group.

The Photographs series includes the official group photo taken at the Institute during the specified year. The photograph was taken each year on the steps of Robert E. Lee Hall at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. Some of the photographs include keys identifying the attendees in the photo.

The Invitation Lists series includes a listing of the names and addresses of individuals invited to the Institute for the specified year. The lists are often divided according to state. The resumes of prospective invitees are also included in this series.

The Mailing Lists series includes printed mailing lists of Institute members for the specified year. The lists are often divided according to state.

The Executive Committee series includes material originated by or addressed to the Blue Ridge Institute Executive Committee during the specified year. In later years, the Executive Committee was known as the Board of Directors. The series includes correspondence among Executive Committee members, Committee membership lists, minutes of Executive Committee meetings, and treasurer's reports for the specified year.

The Correspondence-General series includes correspondence among Institute members, memoranda, notes, announcements, agendas, General Assembly minutes, special committee reports, newspaper clippings, room assignments, reservation correspondence, Blue Ridge Assembly brochures, press releases, and other information for the specified year.

The Planning series includes memoranda and material originating from the Planning/Programming Committee for the specified year. It also includes documents outlining proposed topics and speakers for the proceedings.

The Background Material series includes miscellaneous material and information used as a background for the specified year's proceedings. This includes scholarly articles on community service issues, and literature written by or about the speakers giving presentations at the Institute.

The Related Material series includes all additional materials relating to the specified year's Institute. It includes songbooks, schedules, activity announcements, pocket folders, and the yearly "Black Mountain Gazette," published by the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. Also included is the report "Peopleizing Services A La Blue Ridge" by Institute member Harold J. Weekley. In later years, Weekley's report was distributed annually at the Institute. Audio tapes and video tapes of proceedings and interviews are also included in this series.

The Business Meeting-Minutes series includes the minutes of business meetings held during the specified year. Business meetings were generally attended by the chairs of each Blue Ridge committee.

The Cross References series includes documentation on proceedings within the Blue Ridge Collection that are cross referenced under a different subject heading. Generally, the subject heading related to the specific city that was the subject of the report.
