Captain Hugh Black Papers
Biographical Note:
Captain Black's grandfather came from Scotalnd as a young man and settled
in North Carolina. His father settled in Gadsden County, Florida where
Hugh Black was born, June 28, 1835. He served with Florida troops during
Indian uprisings in 1855-56 and in the Confederate Army from 1861-1865.
Captain Black served and was wounded in the Battle of Chickamaugua. In
1864 he became the County Tax Assessor of Liberty County, Florida and continued
in this capacity for two years until moving to Leon County. He was elected
Clerk of the Legislature in 1868 and also served several years as County
Commissioner in Leon County. Hugh Black died May 19, 1915 in Tallahassee,
Florida.
Scope and Content:
The papers of Captain Hugh Black include letters and one diary written
during the Civil War (1863-1864) by Black to his wife, Mary Ann Black,
from various locations in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia during his service
in the Confederate Army. These contain excellent descriptions of army life
and of the battle fields. There is also a series of letters and accounts
between Captain Black and a Tallahassee merchant, Julius Diamond between
1901 and 1913. Of special interest, are two land deeds (1857-1858) relating
to land of the famous Forbes' Purchases. The collection also includes a
letter to the Hon. Hugh Black from J.B. Whitfield, Treasurer of the State
of Florida (1898) and later a Supreme Court Justice.
The papers became a part of the Special Collections through a gift of Mattie
Black Hopkins, daughter of Captain Black, and of Mrs. Lawrence O'Dea, granddaughter
of Captain Black, and Miss Ruby Diamond, daughter of Julius Diamond.
Letters from the Captain Hugh Black Papers have been included in Letters
of Captain Black to his Family in Florida during the War Between the
States 1862-1864, compiled by Elizabeth Coldwell Frano and printed by
Evansville Bindery, Evansville, Indiana, 1998. The call number is Fla E
