Sport Management Program

Bachelor of Science Degree

Philosophy

The Undergraduate program in Sport Management is designed to provide students with both the academic foundation necessary to successfully continue on to a graduate degree in Sport Administration or to take an entry-level position in the sport industry. The program is continuously refined to aligning the curriculum with the standards forwarded by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).

This two-year (junior/senior) program is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of sport management and the various components that make up the sport industry. Although course content will mostly focus on the applied aspects of sport management, students will be required to become knowledgeable of the current literature, both applied and research based. The ability to take electives allows students to tailor their program towards their interest, whether it be business, recreation, or another discipline across campus. This program is designed and delivered as part of a general education curriculum; however the ability exists to enhance the student's practical experiences through elective internships.

Sport Management Undergraduate Program Course Outline

Core classes - Providing the essentials for knowledge of the various aspects of managing in the sport industry. These courses cover a range of NASSM/NASPE approved content areas and focus on combining theoretical understanding with practical applications for those wishing to work in the sport industry. The core classes consist of ten classes (30 credit hours).

Electives - Electives in this specialization give students the opportunity to focus on a particular area of the sport industry that interests them. There are courses specific to collegiate athletics, courses that focus on the broader industry, and socio-cultural courses focusing on current issues in the industry as a whole. For the undergraduate Sport Management program, you must complete five (15 credit hours) inside elective classes and five (15 credit hours) outside elective classes.

Practicum - Each student will have the opportunity to complete a practical experience meant to be a culminating experience, allowing the student to apply what has been learned in a 'real-life' setting. Experiences include part-time and full-time, volunteer and paid, and are in both in-town and out-of-town settings. Practicum settings have included collegiate athletic departments, intramural departments, professional sport teams, professional sport leagues, private and public sector organizations, entrepreneurial endeavors, and many more. While the practicum is not required to graduate, it is encouraged so that you can have some ‘real-life’ experience to go on your resume.
