Masters Program
This specialization is designed to provide students with an advanced understanding of sport management and the various components that comprise this area of study. Although course content will focus on the applied aspects of sport management, students will be required to become knowledgeable of the current literature, both applied and research based. In order to enhance the student's practical experiences, appropriate internships are a required element of the program of study. This specialization prepares individuals with the appropriate background for employment at the entry or mid-level position.
Components
Core classes - Providing the essentials for knowledge of the various aspects of managing in the sport industry. These courses cover a range of NASSM/NASPE approved content areas and focus on combining theoretical understanding with practical applications for those wishing to work in the sport industry.
Electives - Electives in this specialization give students the opportunity to focus on a particular area of the sport industry that interests them. There are courses specific to collegiate athletics, courses that focus on the broader industry, and socio-cultural courses focusing on current issues in the industry as a whole.
Practicum - Each student completes a practical experience meant to be a culminating experience, allowing the student to apply what has been learned in a 'real-life' setting. Experiences include part-time and full-time, volunteer and paid, and are in both in-town and out-of-town settings. Practicum settings have included collegiate athletic departments, intramural departments, professional sport teams, professional sport leagues, private and public sector organizations, entrepreneurial endeavors, and many more.
Comprehensive Exams - This is the final project to be completed at the end of the coursework. This project will consist of a career portfolio developed as the student goes through the program. http://www.career.fsu.edu/portfolio/
Thesis - Those selecting the thesis option are engaged in learning about the research process and focusing in depth on a particular issue in the sport industry. The thesis option is chosen by those wishing to develop a particular expertise in a certain topic area or by those with the future goal of pursuing doctoral studies.
Admissions/Application Information
Minimum Admissions Requirements
All applicants for the masters degree program must obtain a minimum score of 1000 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with a minimum of 400 on both the quantitative and verbal components; or have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on upper division average and 800 on GRE with a minimum of 400 on both the quantitative and verbal components. All applicants must submit GRE scores.
Applicants must also provide the following:
- Three letters of recommendation addressing capabilities for graduate study (open letter format is preferred).
- A letter of intent which describes your research and work experience as it relates to sport administration, short and long term goals, career aspirations, and why you chose to apply to Florida State University.
- Official transcript(s) from all previously attended colleges and/or universities.
- GRE Scores
- A current resume.
