Undergraduate Education: Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to the K-12 Teacher Certification Program must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and a "C" in all math and English courses. A minimum grade of "C-" or better must be earned in each prerequisite course. Students may be admitted into the University without completing the prerequistes, but may not be admitted into the program. Additionally, all students must pass all four sections of the CLAST for admission into teacher programs. For persons who are already exempt from the CLAST, The Florida Teacher Certification General Knowledge Test is acceptable in lieu of CLAST for admission. Passing scores on the CLAST exam does not include exemption scores. An application to the College of Education and to Teacher Education must be completed prior to beginning the fall semester. An unofficial copy of the student's transcripts must accompany the teacher education application. Both applications and accompanying transcripts must be obtained from and returned to the Undergraduate Advisor for Physical Education Teacher Education in 111 Tully Gym.

Course Work

The teacher certification program provides the academic course work and the pre-professional public school experience necessary to become an effective teacher. Course work is arranged in a specific four-semester sequence designed to culminate in student teaching.

The course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree and teacher certification compasses three areas of work:

  1. Required block and foundation courses
  2. Required elementary and secondary courses
  3. Professional education requirements

Additionally, all physical education teacher certification majors are required to take TSL 4324, ESOL Instruction in the Content Area, EDF 4210 Educational Psychology: Development of Learners, and RED 4335 Content Reading for Secondary Teachers. Students may only enter this program at the beginning of the fall semester. A minimum grade of "C-" or better must be earned in each program course in order to move on to the next course in the program sequence. At any point where a student has a combination of three "D"s and "F"s, the student may be dismissed from the program.

A GPA of 2.5 and CPR/First Aid certification is required for admission to student teaching during the fourth and final semester. Students who meet these requirements must complete an Application to Student Teaching during the third semester of course work. The placement of student teachers will be primarily concentrated in area I (Leon and surrounding counties) where preservice teachers will student teach for a period of 15 weeks.

Advising

All students entering or continuing in the K-12 Teacher Certification Program must be advised each semester by the physical education teacher education (PETE) advisor. The PETE advisor is Brian Mosier and may be contacted at mosier@coe.fsu.edu or (850) 644-2489.
