Research Interests

Dr. James' research examines topics in sport marketing, with a specific focus on sport consumer psychology. Dr. James' work focuses on better understanding the different relationships people form with sports and sports teams, and the impact on cognition and behavior relative to the strength of an individual's relationship with a sports team.

Dr. James has conducted research on the development, maintenance, and erosion of fan loyalty, the transference of loyalty, and the development of a sport identity. Areas of application include building a loyal consumer base for intercollegiate athletics, professional sports, and recreation programs, and strategies for promoting sport services.

Dr. James has published in various journals including Sport Management Review, the International Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship, Sport Marketing Quarterly, the International Journal of Sport Management, the Journal of Sport Behavior, and Leisure Sciences.

Dr. James came to FSU after directing the Sport Management program at the University of Illinois for six years. He earned his Doctorate of Philosophy from The Ohio State University, his Master of Education from Texas Technological University, and his Bachelor of Science from Texas Technological University.
