The Journal: November 14, 2007

 

The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

Senator Jackson led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Special Introductions and Announcements: Mark Zeigler, Professor in the College of Communication, told the Senate that he was a Student Senator at Stetson University. He gave the Senate five charges: (1) be nice; (2) Be proud of what you accomplish; (3) be proud for others; (4) wear someone else’s shoes (look at the situation from their perspective); (5) in all communication, lighten the load (lighten the burden). He said if you did these five things then you will have loyalty from your colleagues.  Zeigler also told the Senate that there are major episodes and minor events: the death of a student is a major episode and Senate meetings are minor events. He urged the Senators to be amazing and be the best that they can be and remember that you (Senators) are here to be a voice for the students.

Messages from the Executive Branch: LaNier Echols, Student Body Treasurer, thanked everyone for coming out to the voting drive and since Homecoming they have registered 900 students. Jessica Haskins told the Senate that the Office of Multicultural Affairs will have a MLK Week, instead of just one day. She said that applications are due on Friday, November 16, if you want to be a mentor and if you want to be in the Academic Bowl, applications are due on November 30. Ryan Powers, OLA Director, asked the Senate to please support the candidate for OLA Assistant Director. He passed out their newsletter.

Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Keenan Mahoney, IRHC Assistant Director, told the Senate that they are currently in the middle of IRHC Week and they will all be going to the Leon County Fair on tomorrow: they sold 46 tickets. He said their remaining events include the True Seminole Tailgate Party and the Carnival on the Green on Sunday.  Jordan Chapman, former Student Senator, told the Senate said there will be an event entitled Going Global and students that have gone abroad will be in the Student Services Building on Friday, November 16 from 3-5 p.m. to give presentations. Senator Cutler announced that the Pride Student Union had an open house and she thanked everyone who came. She said 66 people were in attendance and Florida Public Radio was there also and told them that there is a family that is fighting homelessness and PSU is starting a drive to collect non-perishable food items and clothing and blankets.  David Grimes, ILS Director, announced that they will have the second annual Thanksgiving dinner at Bryan Hall and it is open to all the students who want to attend.

Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: Jason Fishbein, COGS Speaker, thanked the Senators for their service to the students. He said that he is thankful that the relationship between Senate and COGS is better now than it was in the past. He introduced John Lynn, who is the representative at large. Lynn said that he will keep Senate informed on what COGS is doing.

Messages from the Senior Class Council: None.

Messages from the Judicial Branch: Spencer Bishins, Student Supreme Court Chief Justice, told the Senate that they have new Rules of Procedure, new forms and they changed their website.  He informed the Senate that they are under going office renovations and all of their positions are filled for the first time in a long time.  Bishins encouraged the Senate to use the Attorney General (AG), since the AG duties are to answer general questions. He asked the Senate to please support Bill 7.

Messages from the Union Board: Ann Ho, Union Board member, told the Senate that on November 15 at 8:30 p.m., Jens Lekman will be in the Club Downunder and it is free for FSU students. She also announced that on Friday, November 16, Architecture in Helsinki with Panther will be in the Club Downunder at 8:30 p.m., and also on that night the Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company will be in the Union Ballrooms at 8 p.m. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus with Hawthorne Heights, Amber Pacific and New Year Day will be a the Moon on November 16; doors open at 6 p.m. Student tickets are $17. Ho said that Black Kids will be at the Club Downunder on November 28 at 8:30 p.m.  She said that the books open for Spring scheduling on November 26. She said that Chili’s should be open by Spring Break.

Messages from Campus Recreation: Adam Fox said that the treadmills will be in place by Spring semester 2008. He announced that the meeting for the focus group has been changed to after Thanksgiving and if anyone wants to be on the committee they can see him.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of November 13, 2007, Senate  Projects is $14,700.00.

Committee Reports:                   

Student Affairs -    Chairman Toole apologized to the Senate for all the e-mails. She announced that there will be a pot luck dinner on Sunday at the Student Services Building from 2-4 p.m. Senator Abreu said that the website should be finished by next week and she will get the information from the committee chairs.

Judiciary-The committee will meet on November 26.

Internal Affairs-The Senate interviewed and passed Joanna Sattin for HLSU Press and Publicity Chair, Daniel King for Deputy Secretary of Public Relations, Shellina Reeves for Women’s Center Activities Coordinator, Lizette Vernon for CPE Board of Directors, Jonathan Marvel for ILS Public Relations, Anjelica Carpenter for FSU Service Corp Assistant Director, Brandon Flanagan for OLA Assistant Director.

Rules and Calendar - The Senate interviewed and passed Matthew Chapman for Undergraduate Studies Seat 10 and Brett Shafter for Undergraduate Studies Seat 2.

Sweepings-Chairman Harrison announced that the deadline has been extended until Friday, November 16.

Bill 2 - Sponsored by Senators Cutler and Przybylowicz. A revision of $500.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Food. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. TABLED IN FINANCE.

Bill 8 - Sponsored by Senators Entine and Seifter. A revision to the  Student Body Statues Chapter 700. Purpose: to make necessary clarifications and changes to the Elections Code in its entirety. REFERRED TO FINANCE AND JUDICIARY.

Bills Second Reading:

Bill 1 - Sponsored by Senators Cutler and Przybylowicz. A revision of $3,000.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Expense. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. PASSED. (AMENDED IN COMMITTEE FROM $4,000 TO $3,000).

Bill 6 - Sponsored by Senator Harrison. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 412.1. Purpose: to codify the requirements for amending the Sweepings and Central Reserves bills. PASSED AS AMENDED.

Bill 7 - Sponsored by Senator Entine. An allocation of $2,080 from Senate Projects to Student Supreme Court Expense. Purpose: to provide the Student Supreme Court with necessary equipment for functionality and increased productivity. PASSED. (AMENDED FROM $2,080 TO $1,945).

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:

Resolution 2 -  Sponsored by Senator Freelove.

Subject: Requiring that the vice chair of a committee shall serve six (6) weeks in Senate prior to assuming the chair.

Unfinished Business:

New Business: Senator Omega made a motion to waive the Rules of Procedure  and cancel the Senate meeting for Wednesday, November 21; the motion was seconded. The Senate voted 38-yes and 2-no. The Senate will not meet on Wednesday, November 21.

Closing Announcements: Senator Jackson announced that Senator Omega won the city wide Ms. Haitian Cultural Club pageant. Senator Omega thanked everyone for coming out to support her. Senator Dawson needs tickets to the FSU/UF game for his dad and brother.  Senator Emilien congratulated Senators LaCroix and Senator Pierre on being inducted in their business fraternity.  Senator N. Thompson announced that Senator Toole’s birthday was Sunday. Senator Brandow welcomed the new Senators. Sandra Miles urged the Senators to “be yourself”. Senator Sokos announced that there are 100 days until Dance Marathon and it would be good if SGA takes an interest in Dance Marathon. Senator Frady apologized for last Saturday’s game. He said this Saturday will be the last time the Seniors take the field; he asked the Senate to come out and support the team.  Senate Pro Tempore Kushner told the new Senators that there mailboxes are in the Senate office and he wants the mentors and the mentees to write a bill or resolution and it does not have to be real legislation. He also reminded the new Senators that there exams are due back tonight. Senate President Cole announced that Senators Toole, Goins and English all have birthdays this month. She told the Senate that she attended the HCC pageant and Senator Omega gave the Senate a huge shout-out. She told the Senate that a Faculty Senate liaison is needed and there are also two vacancies on the funding boards: one each for the College of Business and the School of Music. Cole announced that this is International Awareness Week this week. She also thanked all the Senators who came out today for the voter registration drive. She thanked Senator DuBosar for his help with the MSA and thanked Senator Singh for inviting Professor Mark Zeigler to speak at Senate.
