The Journal: May 14, 2008


The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:44 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

The Senate did not do the Pledge of Allegiance.

Moment of Silent Reflection:

MEMBERS PRESENT (First Roll Call): Senators Alexander, Atkins, Benson, English, Howard, P. Malone, Omega, Slade, Sokos, Tomlinson, Toole.

MEMBERS ABSENT: (First Roll Call): Senators Colley, Greb, Jackson, LaCroix, Lightner, Misita, Mook, Parks, Pierre, Sexton.

MEMBERS TARDY/LATE (First Roll Call): None.

Senate President Cole told the members present that the Senate did not have quorum.  New Senators were appointed and statutes were read that allowed the Senate to do so.  Cole said that the Senate can meet to confirm new Senators. Reginald Cuyler, Michael Brandow and Ivan Johnson were confirmed as new Senators without objection.  Cole asked the Senators present to please show up next week and help show the new Senators how Senate works.

Senate Confirmations: Reginald Cuyler for Business Seat 2, Michael Brandow for Social Sciences Seat 2 and Ivan Johnson for Graduate Studies Seat 17.

Bills First Reading:

Bill 25-Sponsored by Senators Richards, Paul and James. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 612. Purpose: to make the Golden Tribe Lecture Series an initiative of the Senior Class Council. LAID ON THE TABLE 3-26-08.

Bill 34-Sponsored by Senator Benson. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 701.1 A.  Purpose: to further define campaigning in the Elections Code. REFERRED TO JUDICIARY.

Bill 37-Sponsored by Senator Benson. A revision of $1,197.00 within the Institute for Conservative Studies from Contractual Services to OCO. Purpose: to purchase a new computer for their office. REFERRED TO FINANCE.

THE FOLLOWING BILLS WERE NOT REFERRED TO COMMITTEES. THE REASON IS THAT THE SENATE DID NOT HAVE QUORUM.

Bill 38-Sponsored by Senator Benson.  A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 803.3 B. Purpose: to clarify the finance code regarding the transfer of funds to the OCO category for RSOs.

Bill 39-Sponsored by Senator Benson. A revision of $11,583 within Student Publications from Expense to OCO. Purpose: to purchase 3 new Apple computers.

Bill 40-Sponsored by Senator Cole. A transfer of $700 from Senate Projects to Senate Expense. Purpose: to cover spring expenses and purchase Robert Rules of Order for Senators.


Bill 41-Sponsored by Senator LaCroix. A transfer of $1,500 from Senate Projects to Executive Expense. Purpose: for projected Executive Expenses.

Bills Second Reading:

Constitutional Amendments:                            

Constitutional Amendment 1 (one)-Sponsored by Senator Lightner.  Adding Article X, Sections 1, 2,3 and 4. Unequivocal protections for all of the members of the student body within the Student Body Constitution in a way that will not infringe upon the Expressive or Associative Rights of students or student organizations. CHIEF JUSTICE HILLERT EXPLAINED THE COURTS ADVISORY OPINION. THE AMENDMENT IS NOW REFERRED TO FINANCE AND JUDICIARY.

Constitutional Amendment 2 (two)-Sponsored by Senators Harrison, Toole and Entine.  Adding Article V, Section 8. Clarifying what information shall appear on the official ballot of the student body elections. REFERRED TO STUDENT SUPREME COURT FOR AN ADVISORY OPINION.

Resolutions:                                          

Resolution 41-Sponsored by Senator Benson. Subject: Using the SGA Website instead of the FSView for SGA ads.
