The Journal: January 23, 2008


The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:31 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

Senator Seifter  led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Corrections: None.

Student Comments: Steve Jenks asked the Senate to support the State of Emergency resolution from the NAACP. Sakeena Gohagen, BSU Political Action Chair and Michael Bailey also asked the Senate to please support the resolution for the State of Emergency of the NAACP.  Jared Lord, Underclassmen Council President announced that the Big Fair was a huge success last year and he is expecting 600 people to show up this year. He said so far 30 organizations have confirmed their attendance.  Watt Diego and Megan told the Senate that the Dance Marathon Committee Drive will be held at the College of Medicine on Tuesday, January 29, from 6-9 p.m. and on February 2 there will be a 5K run at 3 p.m. They also announced that there will be a “Lip Sync” competition at Chubby’s on February 6 and a Dodge Ball tournament on February 9 and the Dance Marathon takes place on February 16 and 17. Marvis Barnes told the Senate that there is a problem with social injustice and as students at a higher learning institution, we can do something about it.

Special Introductions and Announcements: Chris Krampert, FSA Executive Director, told the Senate that this is a critical time and their job is to provide a voice for the students at the Capitol. He told the Senate that he looks forward to working with them and Student Senators are needed to help be a voice at the Capitol.  Senate President Cole announced to the Senate that the Union Board Selection Committee needs two Senators to sign up for Tuesday, January 29, for interviews.  Senate Pro Tempore Kushner told the Senate that the Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Mary Coburn line item vetoed Bill 8 and Senate needs to send it back to her with new language.

Messages from the Executive Branch: Cliff Counts, Student Body Vice President, told the Senate that he supports the State of Emergency resolution by the NAACP.  He thanked the Senate for their support for building a new health facility and he wants to form a committee for the new health center. Sam Reda, Secretary of Internal Affairs, announced that SGA is hosting a Kick Ball Tournament on February 2 and please sign the sign up sheet that is circulating.

Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Nicole Vouvalis, ILS Assistant Director told the Senate that the Union Board is in violation of giving space to an organization that discriminates. She told the Senate that ILS is working on getting their office furnished and keeping office hours.

Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: None.

Messages from the Senior Class Council: None.

Messages from the Judicial Branch: None.

Messages from the Union Board: Sadie Mollinet, Union Board Chair, announced that their next meeting is Wednesday, January 30 at 4:30 p.m..  She also announced that applications are due on January 30, for space allocations. Upcoming events: Friday, January 25 Indigo Girls at the Moon, Winter Wonderland in the Union Courtyard and Cosmic Bowling; Tuesday, January 29 Girl Talk with Grand Buffet and Mad Happy CDU.  Movies at the Student Life Building are: January 24 The Ten; January 25 and 26, Gone Baby Gone; January 28 June Bug and January 29, This is England.

Messages from Campus Recreation: None.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of January 22, 2008, Senate  Projects is $18,109.

Committee Reports:

Student Affairs-Chairman Toole announced that the committee will participate in the Big Fair and they will table in the Union, so please sign up.

Budget-Did not meet.

Finance-Chairman Harrison announced that the committee will meet on tomorrow to hear Bill 13.

Judiciary-Chairman Entine said that the committee will meet Monday to interview the candidate for the Student Supreme Court Chief Justice at 5:30 p.m. in the Senate Office.

Internal Affairs-There was a motion to go into Committee of the Whole to interview Andre Gooden and Shalanda O’Neal for Deputy Supervisors of Elections. The motion passed and the candidates were interviewed and passed.

Rules and Calendar-Chairman Kushner said that the committee change the Calendar to hear Resolution 15 after committee reports. He also announced that Senate Norrell has been suspended.

Senate Confirmations: Andre Gooden and Shalanda O’Neal for Deputy Supervisors of Elections.

Consent Calendar: None.        

Bills First Reading:   

Bill 13 - Sponsored by Senators Fasano and Dawson. An allocation of $793.81 from Senate Projects to Equestrian Club. Purpose: to help pay for the Inter-Collegiate Dressage Association Competition on February 9, 2008. REFERRED TO FINANCE.

Bills Second Reading:

Bill 12 - Sponsored by Senators Seifter and Howard. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapters 711, 712 and 715. Purpose: to make changes to the Election Code to allow for online voting to be implemented in addition to registered polling sites. PASSED.

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:

Resolution 8 -  Sponsored by Senators DuBosar and Harrison.

Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 13.

TABLED IN RULES AND CALENDAR.

Resolution 14 - Sponsored by Senator Holman.

Subject: Supporting the NAACP State of Emergency Campaign.

PASSED BY UNANIMOUS CONSENT.

Resolution 15 - Sponsored by Senator Kushner.

Subject: Changing the SGA Elections to February 13, 2008.
