The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:34 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole. Senator Howard led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Student Comments: Shanae Holman, former Senator, congratulated the new Senators. She told the Senate that she receives e-mails from students and one of the e-mails came from a student who thanked her for listening to them about the posters in Union concerning genocide and abortions. She told the Senate that the students are watching them. Senator Crabtree announced that the President’s Ice Cream Social will take place on Wednesday, April 16, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on the Union Green. She asked Senators to sign up to help out. She told the Senate that she will probably go to Haiti over the summer and they are looking for other volunteers to go that are interested in helping out. Dustin Griner, of Light the Night, asked the Senate for their participation on April 14, from 6-7 p.m.; the actual walk will take place in the Fall 08 semester. Cristina Rondolino, a student in the nursing program, told the Senate that the College of Nursing is no longer having a spring program and this will affect about 150 students. She said that she has already signed a lease and she does not know what to do. She told the Senate that her advisor told her to change her major or transfer; and the advisors are not sympathetic. Alex Mook, of the Global Peace Exchange, announced that their banquet will take place on Tuesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Ballroom, and it is now free to all. James Lawrence, Vice Chair of the Sports Club Council, ask the Senate to waive the Rules of Procedure to put Bill 36 on the Calendar. He introduced the new Chair David Beck to the Senate. Kimmie Copley of the Governor’s Office for Internships told the Senate that the deadline to apply is Friday and if you are in SGA you can get an extension of one week. She said you will need to submit your resume, have a 3.0 GPA and a transcript. Tywayne Buchanan, Supervisor of Elections, told the Senate that the SGA and BSU elections are over and he was able to make it to both elections and the SGA Inauguration. He said that the BSU elections were by acclamation and the new BSU members are: Cornelius Troy, President; Patrice Harris, Vice President; Mike Bailey, Treasurer; and Jana’y Johnson, Secretary. He thanked Senator Benson for his help in getting the office a new computer. Special Introductions and Announcements: Senate President Cole introduced Sean Pittman, SGA Lobbyist. Patrick Emilien, OLA Director, introduced State Senator Mike Haridopolos, who represents District 26, which includes parts of Brevard, Indian River, Osceola and St. Lucie Counties. Senator Mike Haridopolos told the Senate that he is also a college professor and he supports Bright Futures. He told the Senate that the best skills they can use is the one of hearing: the more you listen the better off and successful you will be. Messages from the Executive Branch: Laymon Hicks, Student Body President, told the Senate that statutes mandate that he informs the Senate of his plans. He passed out his plans for the upcoming year. Hicks asked the Senate to support the HLSU forwards and Resolutions 33 and 39. He announced that he will have bi-weekly meetings with agencies and bureaus and twice a week cabinet meetings. Patrick Emilien, OLA Director, said that students need to be more knowledgeable of what is going on at the Capitol and $27 million of CITF funds has been set aside for FSU. Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Jose Requena, HLSU Director, told the Senate that their concert on Sunday was a success. He announced that on Thursday, there will be a poetry open mic night and on Friday, there will be a carnival for the kids that go to the Boys and Girls Club. Requena asked the Senate to support the HLSU forwards. He said he is graduating in two weeks and it has been an honor to serve FSU for the past 2-3 years. Keenan Mahoney, IRHC Assistant Director, explained to the new Senators that their office is the liaison between the SGA and Housing. He also announced that Ashley Friedrich was elected Secretary. He said that IRHC updated their bylaws and they will have their end of the year banquet on Monday, April 14. Ashley Finley, Institute for Liberal Studies Secretary, announced that Senator Aronberg will speak tomorrow in the COGS Chamber and there will be free food. Danyell Shackelford, BSU Political Action Co-chair told the Senate that necessary steps were taken to have events and SGA is bound to pay speakers when they make an offer. She said that they were not taught in accounting workshops about making offers for speakers so she is taking full responsibility for getting the speakers for the BSU events. She said they have to continue with the events on Friday. Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: None. Messages from the Senior Class Council: The members introduced themselves to the Senate. They are: Jill Chandler, President; Kenny Cooper, Vice President; Lourdes Angulo, Secretary; and Trent Kilpatrick, Treasurer. Messages from the Judicial Branch: None. Messages from the Union Board: Steve Connell, of the Union Board, announced that Sadie Molinet was elected Chair and Caitlin Lewis was elected Vice Chair. He said that there is a DVD Kiosk in the Union and you can rent DVDs. It is located next to the ATM and the Trading Post. He announced that Iron Wine will be at the Moon on Thursday, and they will have Breakfast 4 a Buck and a Boardwalk Carnival in the Union on Friday. Messages from Campus Recreation: None. Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of April 8, 2008, Senate Projects is $11,480.19. Committee Reports: Student Affairs-Chairman Toole asked the Senate to please come out and volunteer to work at the President’s Ice Cream Social. She said that she will try and get community service hours for Senators who help out. Budget-The committee will meet on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Senate Office. Chairman Sokos made a motion to go into Committee of the Whole, the motion passed. The Senate debated the budget amendment request for the Student Leadership Council to revise their budget of $650 from Expense to Food. The amendment passed. There was a motion to move out of committee, the motion passed. Finance-The committee will meet on Thursday at 6 p.m. Judiciary-The committee will meet on Monday at 7 p.m. Internal Affairs-The committee will meet on Monday at 8 p.m in the Senate Office. Chairman Kaufman made a motion to go into Committee of the Whole, the motion passed. The Senate interviewed and passed Jolie Abreu for HLSU Director and Daniel Cardenas for HLSU Assistant Director. Rules and Calendar-Chair B. Kushner said the committee waive the Rules of Procedure and put Bill 36 and Resolution 39 on the Calendar. Senate Confirmations: Jolie Abreu for HLSU Director and Daniel Cardenas for HLSU Assistant Director. Consent Calendar: Bill 31-Sponsored by Senator Alexander. An allocation of $134.00 from Senate Projects to College Republicans. Purpose: to pay for a party for its members for hosting the CRF State Convention. WITHDRAWN BY SPONSOR 4-9-08. Bill 35-Sponsored by Senator Benson. A revision of $250 within Orchestra from Contractual Services to OCO. Purpose: to purchase a camera for concert recording and audition purposes.
