After-school Mentoring Programs

After-school programs play a valuable role in the lives of children. These programs afford students the opportunity to “become active, engaged, and well-rounded community members by providing youth with meaningful activities and opportunities to develop positive relationships with caring adults and their peers. [After-school programs] support positive youth development outcomes, such as confidence, conflict resolution and decision-making skills, leadership skills, and respect for diversity” (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices. (2005). Supporting student success: A Governor’s guide to extra learning opportunities).
“Access to high quality out-of-school learning experiences that actively engage participants is of paramount importance if this nation is to open the doors of lifelong opportunity to all children, regardless of their circumstances.”
