After-school Mentor Progams

Frequently Asked Questions

What is After-School?
After-school programs occur at the end of the school day. Two of our after-school programs (Leon Arms and Griffin Heights) operate from 3PM-6PM, our third program (Ruediger Elementary) operates from 2:10PM-5PM and our fourth program (Pineview Elementary) operates from 3:30PM-4:30PM.
Who can participate?
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate as a mentor. Some student participants are volunteers, some are service-learners – (a course requirement), while others are also a part of the Federal College Work-Study program – earning their funds as they mentor.
What are mentor requirements?
After-school mentors dedicate at least one hour per week for a minimum of one entire semester. Prior to mentoring is a mentor training which teaches mentoring tips and outlines program policies and procedures. At all trainings paperwork is completed for an FBI Criminal Background Check, and mentoring may not commence until the ID badge is issued. This takes a minimum of 1 week.
When are the Mentor trainings?
During the school year a choice of 5 training dates are available in September, and in January. Additionally, after-school trainings are held in May for the summer mentoring program.
What do I need to bring with me to the mentor trainings?
If you have worked in the Leon County School system and you have gone through a background check, you will need to bring a copy of your fingerprint card and valid picture i.d. You should also bring a copy of your class and/or work schedule so that you can register for a mentoring site.
What programs do mentors use in After-school?
Mentors assist the children with homework. The work ranges from math and reading to science and language arts (writing). At Leon Arms and Griffin Heights the first hour is dedicated to homework and the remaining time is used for enrichment activities.
At Ruediger Elementary from 2:10PM-3PM mentors will assist students with homework, from 3PM-4PM mentors work with students in academic classes, and from 4PM-5PM mentors participate with the children in various enrichment activities (technology, fitness and nutrition, arts and crafts, etc).
At Pineview Elementary mentors will assist students with homework in the areas of math, reading and science.
Is transportation provided?
Students without their own transportation may sign-up for the van, which transports students to every mentoring site (based on Assistant Coordinator class schedules.) Check the van schedule page for availability. Vans leave from the Center for Leadership and Civic Education and return there.
What are the benefits of participating?
FSU Coordinators and Assistants will train, supervise, and support you at each site (as well as stay in contact by e-mail and phone) and ServScript credit is awarded. Mentors gain knowledge, experience with children and tutoring, and make a difference in children’s academic and emotional/social lives.
