FYE - Service Learning Leadership Activities

FYE students have the exciting opportunity to experience leadership by participating in one of the optional Service Learning Leadership Development Activities! Service learning is experiential learning and service for students that is a part of a course or a structured project or activity. As leadership development is an important part of FYE, observing leadership in action and getting hands-on experience in a leadership role can enhance any FYE class. Students have four service learning options to choose from:

  • Students will visit the Center for Civic Eduation and Service to find out about the Outreach Projects for the semester. These Outreach Projects are scheduled on a weekly basis and van service is provided. Students who are interested in participating must sign up one week before the day that they wish to serve. For example, they will participate in one of the sessions of a selected Outreach Project (i.e. serve one afternoon with the Boys and Girls Club Outreach Project). Students are to assist with the Project and observe the Outreach Project team leader and take note of their leadership style, the strengths and weaknesses of his/her leadership and consider any ways that he/she would handle this leadership role differently. A short paper or journal entry could be prepared by the participating student(s).
  • Students will participate in a "Seminole Service Day." (Friday, Nov. 3, 2006) The "Day of Service" is a campus- and/or community-wide event that gets students and Tallahassee residents out volunteering one day in the community. Students can choose to be a Service Day team leader or to observe the Service Day team leader. Students can take note of their own or the team leader's leadership style, the strengths and weaknesses of his/her leadership and consider any ways that he/she would handle this leaderhip role differently. A short paper or journal entry could be prepared by the participating student(s).
  • Students may participate in the "Garnet and Gold Goes Green!" Recycling Program. This program is designed to encourage and promote recycling at the Seminole home football and baseball games. The students who participate are the "friendly face" of recycling at these sporting events. They encourage and direct fans where to recycle. Recycling stations and containers are located throughout the football and baseball stadiums. Students are needed for each home football and/or baseball game. Students can select the game(s) for which they would like to assist. This is a great way to show your concern for the environment and to show your Seminole pride and support! Contact: recycling@fsu.edu to learn more and to sign up. A short paper or journal entry could be prepared by the participating student(s).
  • Students will be responsible for setting up a Voter Registration table at Market Wednesday in the Oglesby Union and encouraging students to register to vote. Students should recruit volunteers to work at the table and conduct a small amount of research on voting statistics among college-age students. Students wishing to participate in this project would need to contact The Leon County Supervisor of Elections Office at 488-1350 located in the Bank of America Building at 315 S. Calhoun Street to get voter registration packets and brief orientation. A short paper or journal entry could be prepared by the participating student(s)

After participating in one of the above activities, students will be able to reflect (through classroom discussion and/or written assignment(s)) on the experience using the Reflection Tool Kit as a guide or instructors' directions.

Students who choose to participate in any one of these service learning leadership opportunities will be able to have their hours documented on their transcripts through the ServScript Program. Students can access the ServScript form at the Center for Civic Education and Service or online at http://www.fsu.edu/~service/students/servscript.htm
