Learn to Serve - Serve to Learn

Service Scholar Program

The purpose of the Service Scholar Program is both to recognize incoming students with an outstanding record of service and leadership and to prepare students to become active citizens and leaders on campus and in their communities after graduation. Selection to the program, usually limited to 12 freshmen each year, is highly competitive. Service Scholars are awarded a four-year renewable scholarship in the amount of $2,400 annually. As a member of the program Service Scholars follow their own path of individual community service, participate in group projects with fellow Scholars, attend regular social and educational sessions, and learn leadership and advocacy skills. Staff of the Center for Leadership and Civic Education oversee and advise the program; however, Service Scholars themselves, through an elected board, plan and manage the activities and service projects as well as maintain the standards for participating in the program.

Scholarships for the program are provided by Florida State University as well as our generous private supporters. The launching of the Service Scholar Program was made possible in 1996 with the financial support of Kathy Villacorta and Tommy Warren along with Howell Ferguson. Our current scholarship endowments include:

Martha McIntosh Service Scholarship Fund
Evelyn Haywood Speed Endowed Scholarship Fund
Edney Family Service Scholarship Fund
Bank of America Scholarship Fund

Who is eligible?
