Amanda Stone is the President’s Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year for 2006-2007. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Amanda has accumulated over 1300 service hours in her three years at Florida State University. She has proven her dedication and leadership in service to FSU, Tallahassee, national, and international communities. On-campus Amanda is a Service Scholar, an Alternative Break Corps participant, a conversation partner at the Center for Intensive English Studies, and a past Outreach Program Team Leader at the Center for Leadership and Civic Education. She also is a Family Pal at Camp Boggy Creek, a camp in Eustis, FL that serves chronically ill children and their families.
Last summer Amanda had the opportunity to spend 10 weeks in Uganda as a result of receiving the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Award from the Office of National Fellowships. During her time in Uganda, she researched women’s property and domestic decision-making rights and conducted human rights seminars in rural areas. Currently, Amanda is translating her research from Uganda into her Honors in the major project that will focus on how feminism is infused into rural developing areas with established histories of patriarchy.
The President's Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year Award is a prestigious award that recognizes students who exhibit tremendous commitment to service. Each school or college selects one student to be the Humanitarian of the Year. Students are then recognized at an awards luncheon hosted by FSU President Wetherell. Students also receive $200 that is donated in their name to the nonprofit agency of their choice. Finally, the student who best exemplifies commitment to service is named the President’s Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year, and an additional $1,000 is given as a donation to the nonprofit agency of his or her choice.
