TALLAHASSEE ACQUIRES NEW COMMUNITY ADVOCATES

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Tallahassee is a city of public servants, and Florida State University students are no exception. New FSU freshmen can join this population of civic leaders at the Fifth Annual Service Leadership Seminar, taking place Tuesday, Aug. 22, through Friday, Aug. 25.

FSU freshmen who attend the Service Leadership Seminar will be exposed to ways they can serve the Tallahassee community. The students will visit and provide community service at several nonprofit agencies. Participants also will have the opportunity to learn how to plan their own events, and they will be encouraged to take those skills and apply them in future service endeavors that will benefit the community.

Bill Moeller, director of FSU's Center for Civic Education and Service, said he believes nonprofit agencies and their constituents build a partnership with FSU when students get involved in their community.

"Introducing Florida State University students to ways they can build their leadership skills by becoming involved in their community is an exciting and rewarding experience for us," Moeller said. "Through the Service Leadership Seminar, we are fostering an atmosphere of civic responsibility and a commitment to leadership education."

Special guest speakers will include Mary Coburn, FSU's vice president of Student Affairs, who will give welcoming remarks and stress the importance of service and leadership at the university and within the community.
"At Florida State University, we are committed to instilling the importance of service in our students," she said. "The Service Leadership Seminar presents students with a unique opportunity in learning what it truly means to be a servant leader."

The Service Leadership Seminar is sponsored by the Center for Civic Education and Service and by Service Corps, a bureau of FSU's Student Government Association. The Center for Civic Education and Service, part of the Division of Student Affairs, provides nonprofit agencies with FSU student volunteers throughout the year.
