Our History
The Department of Air Science and Tactics was established
at Florida State University in July of 1949 under the command of
Lt Col Bernice S. Barr, to select and train students who possess
the character, intelligence, desire and sense of duty to
become Air Force officers and responsible citizens of the United
States. Originally the program offered a specialization in
Administration and Supply. A six-week summer camp was offered
to those cadets completing the first 3 years of instruction.
The corps grew from a modest beginning of 117 to over 260
cadets within two years. Only 2 years before, FSU had been the
Florida State College for Women. By 1958, the corps had swelled
to over 600 cadets.
Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, with headquarters at
Maxwell Air Force Base, AL is the largest and oldest source of commissioned
officers for the Air Force. Air Force ROTC offers two educational
programs--Air Force Senior ROTC and Air Force Junior ROTC.
Senior ROTC Program
The
Air Force Senior ROTC program recruits, educates and commissions
officer candidates through college and
university campus programs based on Air Force requirements. There are
two types of ROTC experiences, and depending on your school choice you'll
either attend a host or cross-town school. As of January 2006, there
are 144 detachments located at colleges and universities
throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Students from schools
near Air Force ROTC host institutions can attend classes at more than 1,000
separate cross-town enrollment programs or consortium agreements at other
schools. Students enroll in Air Force ROTC
classes at the same time and in the same manner as for other college courses.
ROTC courses normally receive academic credit as part of a student's electives.
At each host institution, ROTC instructors typically hold a master's degree and
are accorded the academic rank of assistant professor. The detachment commander holds
the academic
rank of full professor.

The Holm Center
The Cadet Corps
Det 145's cadet corps contains the entire range of majors offered at our
host university and cross-town schools, from Electrical
Engineering to Archaeology. We pride ourselves in our diversity. Our corps
closely reflects the student population at each of our schools. There are
approximately 120 cadets in our program. The detachment has an active chapter of Arnold Air Society that
participates in civic and service events such as Habitat for Humanity. Our
honor guard represents the university at our home football games and takes
part in civic events such as the city Veteran's Day parade, the dedication
of the Korean War Memorial, and Martin Luther King memorial day.
