Air Force
The Department of Air Science and Tactics was established at Florida State University in July of 1949 under the command of Lt Col Bernice S. Barr, to select and train students who possess the character, intelligence, desire and sense of duty to become Air Force officers and responsible citizens of the United States. Originally the program offered a specialization in Administration and Supply.  A six-week summer camp was offered to those cadets completing the first 3 years of instruction.  The corps grew from a modest beginning of 117 to over 260 cadets within two years.  Only 2 years before FSU had been the Florida State College for Women.  By 1958, the corps had swelled to over 600 cadets.

Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, with headquarters at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala, is the largest and oldest source of commissioned officers for the Air Force.  Air Force ROTC offers two educational programs--Air Force Senior ROTC and Air Force Junior ROTC.
Mission -- The mission of Air Force ROTC is to produce leaders for the Air Force and better citizens for America.
Senior ROTC Program -- The Air Force Senior ROTC program recruits, educates and commissions officer candidates through college and university campus programs based on Air Force requirements.  As of April 1998, units were located at 143 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.  Students from schools near Air Force ROTC host institutions can attend classes at more than 800 separate cross-town enrollment programs or consortium agreements.  Air Force Senior ROTC offers primarily two routes to an Air Force commission through four-year and two-year programs. Students enroll in Air Force ROTC classes at the same time and in the same manner as for other college courses. ROTC courses normally receive academic credit as part of a student's electives.  At each host institution, ROTC master's degree and usually is accorded the academic rank of assistant professor.  The unit commander has an academic rank of full professor.

The Cadet Corps
Det 145's cadet corps contains the entire range of majors here at FSU from Electrical Engineering to Archaeology. We pride ourselves on our diversity.  Our corps closely reflects the university's student population.  There are approximately 140 cadets in our program.  Many are recognized by the university as "Torchbearers," given only to the best and brightest of the school. The Det has an active chapter of Arnold Air Society that participates in civic and service events such as Habitat for Humanity.  Our honor guard represents the university at our home football games and takes part in civic events such as the city Veteran's Day parade, the dedication of the Korean War Memorial, Martin Luther King memorial day.  Recently, our cadets put together a 50th anniversary celebration for the detachment and its alumni during the university's homecoming week.

 Integrity. Service. Excellence.
