University Teaching Awards
The
University Teaching Awards program recognizes faculty for excellence
in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Recipients must be outstanding
in the many aspects of teaching which contribute to successful
teaching and learning. This is a student-oriented award with nominations
submitted by students and alumni.
2005 Winners from the Department of Religion
David
Kangas teaches courses on contemporary continental
philosophy, modern religious thought and philosophy of religion
since Kant, and apophatic or “mystical” traditions.
Recent
seminars include German idealism (Hegel, Schelling, Fichte),
Romanticism (Novalis, Schlegel), Kierkegaard, phenomenology
and theology (Husserl, Levinas, Derrida), and “Luther
to Leibniz” (Luther, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz).
Dr.
Kangas is also preparing a seminar for the spring of 2006
on Meister Eckhart and his successors. |

Martin
Kavka regularly teaches the department's introductory
class on the Jewish tradition, a survey of post-Holocaust
literature, theology and film, as well as more advanced
classes on modern Jewish thought and twentieth-century philosophy
and theology.
Recent
graduate seminars include "Pragmatism in Jewish and
Christian Thought" and, with David Kangas, "Phenomenology
and Religion."
In the
Fall of 2006, he will add an undergraduate lecture class
on the intersection of politics and religion to his rotation. |

Outstanding Graduate Assistant Awards
The
Outstanding Graduate Assistant Awards program recognizes graduate
students for excellence in instructional skills, course structure,
accessibility, rapport with students, evaluation of learning,
scholarship, and professionalism. The winners were selected from
