University Teaching Awards

The University Teaching Awards program recognizes faculty for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Recipients must be outstanding in the many aspects of teaching which contribute to successful teaching and learning. This is a student-oriented award with nominations submitted by students and alumni.

2005 Winners from the Department of Religion

David Kangas teaches courses on contemporary continental philosophy, modern religious thought and philosophy of religion since Kant, and apophatic or “mystical” traditions.

Recent seminars include German idealism (Hegel, Schelling, Fichte), Romanticism (Novalis, Schlegel), Kierkegaard, phenomenology and theology (Husserl, Levinas, Derrida), and “Luther to Leibniz” (Luther, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz).

Dr. Kangas is also preparing a seminar for the spring of 2006 on Meister Eckhart and his successors.

Martin Kavka regularly teaches the department's introductory class on the Jewish tradition, a survey of post-Holocaust literature, theology and film, as well as more advanced classes on modern Jewish thought and twentieth-century philosophy and theology.

Recent graduate seminars include "Pragmatism in Jewish and Christian Thought" and, with David Kangas, "Phenomenology and Religion."

In the Fall of 2006, he will add an undergraduate lecture class on the intersection of politics and religion to his rotation.
