Nam and Boyd are extending Nam’s long-term work on measurement of occupational status,
a critical socioeconomic variable in population research. The occupational socioeconomic status
(OSS) scale has been constructed for census years 1950 through 2000. They are now developing a time
series of OSS that standardizes the scores across years.
The history of OSS and scores for 2000 can be found in Charles B. Nam and Monica Boyd. 2004.
Occupational status in 2000; Over a century of census-based measurement. Population Research and Policy Review, 23:4, 1-36.
A tool for assigning an occupational score for 2000 when occupational information does not conform to the census
list of detailed occupations can be accessed by referring to the site Coding to N-P-B Scores.
Carlson is exploring international population dynamics, with emphasis on family patterns, health and survival in Eastern European societies. Schmertmann is developing estimation methods for demographic rates in small areas with sparse data.
