Population
Determinants and consequences of world population growth and changes, components
of population growth in more and less developed countries, population and food
supply/nonrenewable resources interrelationships.
ECP 4623 Regional
Economics
ECO 2013, 2023. The economics of subareas of nations with special emphasis on
regional economic developments. Includes the theory of the location of industry.
SYD 3020 Population and Society
This course examines the causes and consequences of population change in the
United States and the world with an assessment of the impact of demographic
change on various social institutions.
GEO 1400 Human Demography
Introductory survey of world population problems, global economic restructuring,
international development, political interdependence, and world regional
cultures.

ECP 3302 Economics of
Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment
The relationship between natural resource availability and growth, capital
theory, economics of the environment, the U.S. energy problem and alternatives
for the future, an economic appraisal of U.S. energy policy.
URP 4423 Introduction to Environmental Planning and Resource Management
A general introduction to the problems of resource management and environmental
planning, with an overview of problems and potential solutions and their
relation to other public policy areas such as land- use control and regional
development.
GROUP TWO: HEALTH
ECP 3530 Economics of
Health
The course provides an overall view of the U.S. health care system, focusing on
the following topics: demand for medical care, health insurance, hospitals,
physician services, regulation verses completion for cost containment,
alternative delivery care systems, financing uncompensated care, Medicare
prospective payment system, long-term care, and economic issues concerning
health related behavior.
URP 4523 Introduction to Health Planning
Examines the structures, policies, resources, and services of the health care
system, including both the public and private sectors and systems for acute,
chronic, and long- term care. Focuses on planning and policy needs and
implications.

SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
ECS 4013 Economics of
Development
Economic development as a process, description and analysis; alternative overall
theories of development; particular problems and policy responses to them;
strategic choices in development policy. Main focus on third world economies.
SYO 4550 Comparative Sociology
This course deals with variations and patterns of development in individuals and
social institutions across societies.
URP 4615 Planning for Developing Regions
This course will introduce the student to the field of development planning and
gives the student exposure to the interplay between theory and practice. Topics
include concepts of development, measurement and indicators of patterns of
development, rural development, urban development, preparation of development
plans, and implementation of development plans.
URP 4741 Housing and Community Development
Focuses on the operation of housing market, the nature of housing and community
development problem, and the gradual development of a national housing and
community development policy since the 1930s. Relationships between public and
private sectors are examined.

STUDIES
ECP 4613 Urban
Economics
Theory of urban development, location theory, economics of housing, local public
finance, and urban problems associated with poverty, racial discrimination, and
transportation.
GEO 3540 Economic Geography
The geography of economic activity at local, national and global scales.
Regional development, spatial structure of agriculture, manufacturing and
services. The global economy, third world poverty, and population growth.
GEO 4602 Urban Geography
The historical growth of cities; spatial structure of commercial, industrial,
and public facilities within cities; residential segregation; urban problems of
poverty, environmental degradation, and fiscal distress. Hyper urbanization in
the third world.
MAR 3023 Basic Marketing Concepts
A required prerequisite for all marketing courses. Gives the student an
understanding of the decision areas and the ability to utilize marketing
concepts to make business decisions.
SYD 3600 The Community in Urban Society
An introduction to the community as a changing form of social organization with
emphasis on community field studies (ethnographies), theories of communal
organization, and study of community-specific processes such as power
distribution and decision making, conflict, stratification, and the dynamics of
land-use change. Special attention is given to the study of the metropolitan
community in US society and its inner city and suburbs.
URP 3000 Introduction to Planning and Urban Developments
Introduces planning concepts and the role of planning in formulating policy,
meeting critical problems, and shaping the future of urban environment.
GROUP FIVE: RESEARCH
METHODS
GEO 4142 Geographic
Information Processing and Systems
Survey of GIS topics, including locational control, spatial data
structures,spatial/cartographic statistics, modeling and analysis, and future
trends in decision support, sensors, and geographic methods.
SYA 4300 Methods of Social Research
Broad coverage of research design, data collection, and analysis. This is a
required course for sociology majors.
SYA 4400 Social Statistics
This course involves the application of statistical techniques to sociological
data as illustrated in the research and writing of social scientists. As a
course for majors, it represents an important part of the students
methodological training with respect to the statistical analysis of data
typically used by sociologists. The student is expected to carry out of number
of exercises involving the statistical analysis of sociological data and to
interpret the results.
STA 3014 Fundamental Business Statistics
Elementary probability, binomial and normal distributions, sampling, statistical
applications in business. Also offered by the College of Business.
