First Annual UF/FSU Colloquium on Practical Philosophy

The FSU Department of Philosophy hosted the First Annual UF/FSU Colloquium on Practical Philosophy on Friday, 3 October 2008 from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm in 103 Dodd Hall Auditorium (DHA). The presenters were Jon Tresan of UF, and Piers Rawling and David McNaughton of FSU.

Philosophy Graduate Student Association Friday Presentation

The FSU Department of Philosophy Graduate Student Association (PGSA) kicked off the 2nd year of its Friday Presentations program on Friday, 26 September 2008 at 3:30 pm in 103 Dodd Hall Auditorium (DHA). This graduate student run program allows graduate students in the department the opportunity to present papers to their peers on current research projects as they prepare for upcoming conferences or submissions for publication. The first talk of the 2008-2009 academic year was given by John Stigall. The title of his talk was "Russell's Horseshoe, Lewis' Fish Hook, Hume's Problem".

The FSU Department of Statistics kicked off its fall colloquium series on Friday, 26 September 2008 at 10:10 am in 110 Rogers Building (OSB), when it hosted the Department of Philosophy's own, Joshua Gert. Professor Gert presented "Some Remarks on the Nature of Color".

The Philosophy Department kicked off the fall portion of its annual colloquium series on Friday, 12 September 2008 at 3:30 pm in 103 Dodd Hall Auditorium (DHA). For the first talk of the year, the department welcomed Professor Joseph Mendola, professor of philosophy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Professor Mendola spoke on "The Conditional Analysis of Ability".

For the ninth and final talk of the spring, the department welcomed Professor Dominic Murphy, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at The California Institute of Technology. Professor Murphy spoke on "Introspection & Cognition". Previous presentations this semester were given by Gary Watson, Matthew Kotzen, Angela Potochnik, Joel Velasco, James Justus, Russell Powell, Stephen Kearns, and Thomas Nadelhoffer.

For the eighth talk of the spring, the department welcomed Professor Gary Watson, Professor of Philosophy at The University of California-Riverside. Professor Watson spoke on "The Trouble with Psychopaths".

2008 History & Philosophy of Science (HPS) Workshop: Do the History of Science and the Philosophy of Science Have Anything to Say to Each Other?
The Program in the History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) held its biennial HPS workshop on March 21-22, 2008 in 204 Longmire. The theme of the 2008 workshop was "Do the History of Science and the Philosophy of Science Have Anything to Say to Each Other?" Sponsored by the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Endowment Fund, the HPS Workshops offer opportunites for several scholars to present works in progress, which are then discussed critically by the attendees. 4th Annual S.W.A.P. Conference

The Society for Women's Advancement in Philosophy (S.W.A.P.) presented the fourth annual S.W.A.P. conference on 22-23 February 2008. The keynote speakers for this event were Ann Cudd (University of Kansas), who spoke on "Wanting Freedom", and Marina Oshana (University of Florida), who delivered "Through the Looking Glass: What Philosophy Looks Like From the Inside When You're Not-Quite-There". Papers were also presented from invited graduate students on various branches of philosophy applied to issues of race, sexuality, gender, and related topics. Werkmeister Conference on Free Will & Science Friday-Sunday, 18-20 January 2008
The FSU Department of Philosophy presented The William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Conference on Free Will & Science on 18-20 January 2008. This was the 8th year that the department has hosted the conference since its inception back in 2001. The Werkmeister Conference is an annual event on a selected topic in philosophy held in honor of Professor William H. Werkmeister and his wife, Lucyle T. Werkmeister, and is graciously sponsored by the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Endowment Fund.

FSU Graduate-Undergraduate Philosophy Department Colloquium Monday, December 3, 2007 from 2-4 pm in 103 Dodd Hall Auditorium (DHA)
The FSU Undergraduate Philosophical Association hosted the FSU Graduate-Undergraduate Philosophy Department Colloquium on Monday, December 3, 2007 from 2-4 pm in 103 Dodd Hall Auditorium (DHA). This colloquium allowed undergraduate philosophy students the opportunity to meet their teaching assistants and instructors. The event also facilitated discussion on philosophy graduate programs, individuals' FSU experiences in philosophy, and general advice for excelling in the field of philosophy. Undergraduate philosophy majors were encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about their academic and professional future in philosophy.

Professor Smith spoke on "Guilty Thoughts".

Philosophy Major Joseph O'Shea named Rhodes Scholar
Philosophy major Joseph O'Shea did it again, as he added Rhodes Scholar to his impressive list of accomplishments, including Truman Scholar, FSU student-body president, and member of the USA Today's Elite 2007 All-USA College Academic First Team. As a Rhodes Scholar, O'Shea will receive funds for up to three years of undergraduate or post-graduate study in England at the University of Oxford. For the complete story, click here.

The 53rd Annual Meeting of the Florida Philosophical Association (FPA) was hosted by the FSU Department of Philosophy on 9-11 November 2007. The event commenced at 7:00 pm on Friday, 9 November, at the Marriot Residence Inn (600 West Gaines Street) and continued at 8:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, 10-11 November, in the HCB Building on the FSU campus. For the third talk of the fall, the department welcomed Professor David Schmidtz, Kendrick Professor of Philosophy and joint Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona, and a visiting Professor in the FSU College of Law during Fall 2007. Professor Schmidtz spoke on "Psychological Freedom".

The Anna Forbes Liddell Graduate Fund for Excellence
The Anna Forbes Liddell Graduate Fund for Excellence was recently established by a generous gift from Dr. Frank Bean and his wife, Mrs. Miki Bean. This gift honors the life of Professor Anna Forbes Liddell, a philosopher and a pioneering proponent of women's rights. Dr. Liddell was a gifted and influential teacher at Florida State University for 36 years (1926-1962) and held many distinctions and honors. Besides her teaching and writing of academic philosophy, she was also very active and successful in the Women's Suffrage Movement. As a teenager she marched with the suffragettes; much later in her life she testified before the Florida House of Representatives in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. This gift will support the needs of graduate students in the Department of Philosophy.

This program supports scholars working in critical areas of education research and funds proposals that make significant scholarly contributions to the field of education.

Conference on Color Saturday, 14 April 2007
The FSU Department of Philosophy hosted its Conference on Color on Saturday, 14 April 2007, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm (Morning Session) and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm (Afternoon Session), in the Starry Conference Room (Room 214, Rovetta Business Building B). Organized by the philosophy department's own scholar of color, Joshua Gert, this conference brought together some of the leading scholars of color, including Alex Byrne, David Hilbert, Justin Broackes, Michael Watkins, and Jonathan Cohen.

Philosophy Major Joseph O'Shea named Truman Scholar
Philosophy major Joseph O'Shea has now added Truman Scholar to his impressive list of accomplishments, including FSU student-body president and member of the USA Today's Elite 2007 All-USA College Academic First Team. As a Truman Scholar, O'Shea will receive $30,000 to study at the graduate school of his choice, whereupon graduation he will be required to work in public service for three out of seven years. In Memoriam: C. David Gruender, Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, (1927-2007)
C. David Gruender, FSU professor emeritus of philosophy and authority on the history and philosophy of science, passed away on Sunday, 25 March 2007, at the age of 79. A strong advocate of science education in Tallahassee and the rest of Florida, Professor Gruender taught in the FSU Department of Philosophy from 1967 to 1999 and served six years as the department chair (1972-1978). A memorial service will be held Thursday, 24 May 2007 at 4:00 p.m. in the Werkmeister Reading Room of Dodd Hall. Parking will be available in both the Dodd Hall and Diffenbaugh Building parking lots (map) beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Werkmeister Conference on the Origin of Species Friday/Saturday, 23-24 March 2007
The FSU Department of Philosophy and the Program in the History and Philosophy of Science presented The William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Conference On the Origin of Species on 23-24 March 2007. The event took place in Room 009 Diffenbaugh on Friday and in the Devoe L. Moore Center, Room 150 Bellamy on Saturday. This was the 7th year that the department has hosted the conference since its inception back in 2001. Professor Gert presented the honorary Bayles Lecture as he spoke on "Pleasure and Pain".

"The Pathologies of Standard Analytic Epistemology" (Noûs 39.4 [2005]: 696-714), an article co-authored by FSU Professor Michael Bishop and J.D. Trout (Loyola University-Chicago), has been named by Blackwell Publishing as one of the Top 5 Downloaded Articles in Noûs, one of the premier philosophy journals.

The Great Debate: Is There a God?
The Department of Philosophy co-sponsorsed (with the Center for Inquiry Community of Tallahassee and the FSU Department of Communication) a debate on the existence of God between Richard Swinburne, Oxford Don, and R. Joseph Hoffmann, Chair of the Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion. This event took place on Thursday, 2 November at 7:00 pm at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center.
Additionally, the Department of Philosophy welcomed Richard Swinburne as the third speaker of our Fall 2006 colloquium series. Dr. Swinburne spoke on Friday, 3 November 2006 at 3:30 pm in 103 Dodd Hall Auditorium (DHA). The title of his paper was "What Makes Me Me".

PhD Graduate Student Chris Zarpentine Wins 2006 Florida Philosophical Association (FPA) Outstanding Graduate Philosophy Paper Award
The Department of Philosophy would like to congratulate current PhD graduate student Chris Zarpentine on receiving the 2006 FPA Outstanding Graduate Philosophy Paper Award. This award includes a monetary prize, the opportunity for Chris to present his paper at the upcoming 2006 FPA Annual Conference, and the publication of Chris' paper in The Florida Philosophical Review. Past philosophy department graduate student recipients of this award include: Jeremy Kirby (2004) and Jason Turner (2003).

For our first talk of the year, we welcomed Dr. Ish Haji, professor of philosophy at the University of Calgary. Dr. Haji spoke on "Hard Incompatibilism, Value, and the Repugnant Conclusion."

Philosophy Department Donates 1,000 Books to the FSU Libraries

PhD Graduate Student Adam Feltz Wins 2006-2007 Kingsbury Writing Award
The Department of Philosophy would like to congratulate current PhD graduate student Adam Feltz on being named as one of the recipients of the 2006-2007 Kingsbury Writing Award. This university wide fellowship is awarded annually to four graduate students who exhibit "excellence of thought and expression, creativity, and originality." Past philosophy department graduate student Kingsbury awardees include: Lisa Watkins (2005-2006), Thomas Nadelhoffer (2004-2005), Charles Hermes (2003-2004), Jeremy Kirby (2002-2003), Adam Sipos (2001-2002), and Peter Hanowell (2000-2001).

Public Forum: "Keeping Science & Religion Separate in Schools: THE VIGIL AFTER DOVER"
This forum was the first public, high-level, in-depth discussion by leading authorities in evolutionary biology, theology, philosophy, anthropology, and constitutional law on the implications of Kitzmiller et al v. The Dover School District et al since a federal ruling was handed down in that case—the nation’s first trial on intelligent design—on Dec. 20, 2005. Professor Michael Ruse was among the panelists to discuss the Dover aftermath. Professor Michael Ruse is the Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University.

Professor Alfred Mele Receives 2005-2006 Graduate Teaching Award
On 10 April 2006, Professor Alfred Mele was presented with the 2005-2006 Graduate Teaching Award for his excellence in graduate teaching. Recipients of this award are deemed outstanding in the many aspects of teaching which contribute to successful teaching and learning. Professor Mele is the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University.
