The Night of the Arts, Fall 2004

by Maria Jose Sobalvarro

The FSU-PTY (Florida State University– Panama City) auditorium was filled with art, acting, singing, and even some entrepreneurship, on October 21, 2004.

Night of the Arts is an evening where students at Florida State University–Panama have the opportunity to show their hidden abilities that rest of the student community was not aware of. Acting and play writing were the fortes displayed by one of those students, Derek Underwood. Derek not only wrote and acted in the play, but also directed the play. Along with Ricardo “Nemo” Agurcia, Marcus Guillette, Philly D, Christian Gibbs and a cast of many actors Derek Underwood put on a show that was worth the audience’s time.

After the play Wesley Hoggard, another FSU-PTY student, showed his ability of film editing by showing a video he produced, while traveling to San Blas with some of the International Students currently enrolled at FSU-Panama. The film was able to capture some of the fun activities students can take on while attending FSU-Panama.

The musical entertainment was in a class of its own. The acoustic sounds created by Jason Berger and his guitar delighted everyone. His only band member, who played the contra bass as if there was no tomorrow, accompanied Jason’s sounds and together they made the evening a very delightful time for our ears.

The more business-oriented students came to practice their skills also during the night of arts. A group of students, who are currently venturing into an entrepreneurial idea of selling art, displayed some of their work under the title “ALL-IN”. Their vision is based on lucky bamboo plants and their sell. It seems that they had a good turn out, due to the fact that they donated 10% of their earnings to the Florida State University Student Government Body.

Night of the Arts was a total success greatly in part because of the aid given by Dr. Benjamin Murphy, Dr. Langoni, Ricardo “Nemo” Agurcia, Derek Underwood, and many others. The cohesiveness displayed by all the students, during the evening of Oct. 21, 2004, was one that surpassed any other Night of the Arts given before. It seems that FSU-Panama is becoming more and more a fun place to be and to learn.
