Flood-Free Panama
by Carlos Vargas

On October 26, 2004, FSU-Panama Environmental Club representatives visited El Instituto Bolivar to consolidate the first outreach project of the Environmental Club. During this visit the EC representatives gave a speech about the factors causing floods such as littering and deforestation, settled the base for the Instituto Bolivar's own Green Group and initiated a plan to reduce the waste produced by the school. This plan is based on a document from “Clean Up the World.” The first step to be taken is the creation of a recycling program within the school. The Green Group from Instituto Bolivar’s first task will be to make a survey of the main types of waste produced in the institution and determine which are produced in enough quantities to feasible be recycled.

Through this program the EC members expect to create a conservation and recycling conscience in these middle school level students. We hope that this effort will be emulated by other schools around the country.
