With the support of FSU-Panama and La Junta Communal de Ancon, the Environmental club of FSU-Panama conducted the beach clean up of La Boca-Ancon beach behind the FSU-Panama campus. When we first arrived to the beach, our first impression was that there was too much garbage for us to handle and that it would take several trips to clean the beach thoroughly. We faced the facts that we lacked equipment to dig out partially buried trash material, such as strong gloves to deal with broken pieces of metal with sharp ends, pikes to get trash material in between rocks and deep inside tall grass, appropriate bags strong enough to contain the heavy load and sometimes sharp pieces of wood, glass and metal. Lack of equipment is one of the challenges that new organizations face, but coping with those problems prepares us for future activities of this type. Despite pessimistic predictions and after six hours of intense work the members of the Environmental club, guests and academic staff members against all my predictions cleared our most of the garbage from the beach. The Environmental Club could not have conducted this project without the special support of Dr. Ernesto Quintero, Dr. Carlos Langoni, Mr. Eric Holland, and Dr. Paul Anderer. We also have to express our gratitude to the maintenance crew which cleared the way to the beach from the university, to La Junta Communal de Ancon for the garbage bag donation, and to the security crew for their support and help. |
