The Search for the New Rector

by Mónica Martínez

Last October, Dr. James Pitts and Ms. Joan Cassels, two Florida State-Tallahassee officials, visited our campus. Dr. Pitts, Director of International Programs at FSU, and Ms. Cassels, the Assistant/Academic Administrator, came to FSU-Panama in order to initiate the search for a new rector.

In the meeting they had with Philip Denis, President of the FSU-Panama Student Government, on October 28, they informed him that the search for the new rector had yet not officially begun. However, one of the main reasons for their visit to the campus was to meet with the FSU-Panama Board of Directors to discuss the process. Dr. Pitts told the FSU-Panama Student Government President that the first step would probably be to form a search committee.

He informed Mr. Denis that when the search officially starts, the Office of International Programs will place ads in various publications, such as the Chronicle of Higher Education, in order to secure a pool of qualified applicants from all over the world.

With regard to the involvement of the FSU-Panama community, Dr. Pitts stated that we students will indeed be an important part of the interviewing process. However, he informed Mr. Denis that he does not yet know exactly how or at what point in the process students will become involved. The first step will be for the committee to narrow down the candidates to a small group of finalists who will eventually come to Panama for a visit.

At this moment, then, The Pananole News is able to report that the main campus is working on the process to start the search for the new rector. Stay alert. We’ll continue to keep you informed!*

*The writer thanks Phillip Denis for the information.
