First day policy...
by Carla Pinilla

As of Fall Semester 2003, a new official policy came into effect in the main FSU Campus, and subsequently in FSU-Panama: it is mandatory that every student attend the very first class that he or she is enrolled in, or else the student will be dropped from the class automatically.

We can't stop this from happening, since it already did; we all saw Gabriela come into the classrooms asking professors for the roster. However, the fact that it happened does not mean we have to like it. So, I decided to conduct a little unofficial poll to see the different reactions I could find within the student body.

Most of the people I interviewed responded favorably to the new policy. Some of them mentally walked a few steps in the staff's shoes and decided that this situation made registration even easier than it already is. If a student doesn't come to class the first day it's because he/she is obviously not interested enough. Getting them out of the class this way is ten times less of a hassle than having them come in and out of the office on the last day of add/drop week.

Others responded that it is okay, as long as the people who really have some sort of emergency aren't affected. Some went as far as to tell me that it should be implemented the whole semester, as in kicking out all students that are absent more than two or three times.

This doesn’t mean that all responses were positive, though. Some people (the ones that were affected, I guess) claimed that it should be applied only for certain classes. Their argument was that some classes become full and they can't enroll again. Well, if they're going to keep missing classes, whatever floats their boats, I guess...

Other students didn't even know about it (good thing I asked them, then). I advise everyone to be aware of official e-mails sent by the office/student advisor, because they're often important. For the next time, maybe it'd be good if they posted signs on the boards alerting people of such things.

As I said, this policy comes directly from Tallahassee, so it was imposed on us. The only thing we can do is to be conscious of it in the future and do our best to deal with it without having any problems.
