Mission Statement
The mission of the programs within the Department of Middle and Secondary Education is to prepare educational personnel by informing and improving the learning and teaching of English, English as a foreign language, English as a second language, foreign languages, mathematics, school and community health, science, and social studies. In addition to specializing in middle and high schools, we also focus on learners of all ages in a variety of settings.
Teacher education is a central responsibility of our programs at all degree levels. As programs situated in a research institution, central activities include the research and development of model programs and the inquiry that improves learning.
The department's mission includes a commitment to:
- Establishing educational communities, including the schools and associated agencies and organizations that cooperate in collaborative activities;
- Contributing to the advancement of the disciplines, whereby individual and collective faculty scholarship is encouraged, supported, and sustained;
- Maintaining programs at all levels that reflect the needs of the related fields and are grounded in best practices, as reflected by current knowledge bases;
- Providing responsible and productive Ph.D. programs grounded in research activities, at the forefront of their respective fields;
- Promoting diversity and equity; and
- Providing leadership and service to the educational communities the programs serve.
