Welcome to the Social Science Education Program
Florida State University

The social science education faculty welcomes your interest in our program. The Social Sciences are a dynamic constantly changing field that brings great challenges to educators in school, community, and at the university level.

Our social science program offers four possibilities depending on the goals you have set for yourself in preparing for your future.

The undergraduate program prepares you for the teaching profession at the K-12 grade levels with certification.

Our Master's program consists of two types: A Master's Degree in Social Science Education with teacher certification or a Master's Degree (post-certification) for those students who are already certified.

The Specialist Degree enables students to take advanced courses. Thesis and non-thesis options are available.

Finally, our Doctoral Degree in social science education leads to a Doctorate of Education (Ed. D.) or to the Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph. D.). This degree will prepare you for higher education and research with an in-depth understanding of our field.

Our social science education program is taught from a global perspective grounded in the belief that all members of the human family are created equal. Courses address multiple perspectives human beings hold of each other and other nations, acquisition of knowledge regarding the diversity of human cultures and their contributions to civilization, the cultural, economic, geographic, and geopolitical interconnectedness among nations and people, consequences of the ubiquity of change, and implications of individual choices shaping the future of the world.
