Dr. Mary Sutherland is a Professor in the Department of Middle School and Secondary Education, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306. She serves as coordinator of the undergraduate and graduate school and community health education programs, teaching such courses as grant writing, community development, community health methods, research, readings or foundations.

Dr. Sutherland scholarly activities in her over twenty years at The Florida State University have focus on African-American Faith Community Cardiovascular and Prevention Programs; Community Partnership and Coalition Development; Safe and Drug Free Schools/Communities Needs Assessment, Evaluation, and Program Development, as well as, Senior Citizens Health Promotion.

She and Gregory J. Harris during the last eighteen years have developed a rural program model for implementing any health related content area, i.e., drug prevention, cardiovascular, cancer or arthritis, within the African-American church setting. The Faith Based Prevention Model is considered a CSAP Promising Practice, as well as, a Center for Disease Control and Prevention Model of Community Engagement. As a part of the early nineties program developmental processes, programmatic materials were developed such as: How to Develop a Church Based Prevention Program; The Minister Manual; Growing Old Drug Free With My Grandchildren; Family Life/Intergenerational Activities; Partnership Development/Community Development; or Parenting. Later, they expanded the faith concept to address rural faith based prevention coalition development and are currently facilitating three Florida rural coalitions and evaluating two other coalitions. Dr. Sutherland in her career has been associated with fifteen coalition developmental projects, including a state wide Kellogg funded Maine coalition.

Dr. Sutherland has received approximately one million dollars in funding from the Florida Department of Health for Florida State University for cardiovascular, cancer or other chronic disease programs. With Mr. Harris, they have received approximately eight million dollars for faith, coalition, and needs assessment projects from the Department of Health and Human Service, Officers of Minority Health, CSAP, and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration; US Department of Justice; Florida Governors Office; Florida Department of Children and Families; American Heart Association; or Florida Departments of Health and Children and Families. They have published over 75 articles in such journals as the Journal of Primary Prevention; International Quarterly of Community Health Education; Journal of School Health; Health Values; Journal of Drug Education; Educational Gerontology; American Journal of Health Studies; Journal of Health Education; or Journal of Applied Gerontology, for example. Numerous professional organization and governmental presentations (100+) have been made for the American Public Health Association; Academy of Health Behavior; American School Health Association; National Prevention Network; American Association for Health Education; Center for Substance Abuse Prevention; DHHS, Health Resources and Services Administration; or the National Cardiovascular Heart Conference.

Dr. Sutherland has received awards and recognitions from such organizations or agencies as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, National Model of Community Engagement and Secretary's Award for Health Promotion; Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Exemplary Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Award; US Department of Education, Noteworthy Program and Practices Award; American Association of Retired Persons, Health Promotion Program Award. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Health Behavior and the AAHPERD Research Consortium. In Florida, she has been recognized by the Florida Public Health Association, Dr. J. Y Porter Award, and the American Heart Association, Heart Merit Award.

Prior to coming to Tallahassee, Dr. Sutherland taught at the University of Maine, Farmington; State University College at Brockport; University of Alabama, and within the State of Georgia College System. She is a graduate of Michigan State University (BS), University of Tennessee (MS and MPH) and a doctorate from The University of Alabama. Dr. Sutherland is a native of Michigan, but has worked within the Southern Culture for many years.
