Description of Core Courses

Museum Studies and Practice - HIS 6087
This course includes an overview of the roles, functions and practical operations of museums. Topics include the historical development of museums; organizational structures; governance; management; the philosophy behind the care, interpretation and exhibition of collections; strategic planning; ethics; marketing; and the mandate of serving communities and diverse constituencies.

The Museum Object - ARH 5838
The Museum Object course covers the philosophy and practice of interpreting, displaying, conserving the museum object. Issues of acquisition, deaccessioning, legal and ethical considerations, programs and dissemination of research reflect principles advocated by the American Association of Museums. Practical laboratory experience is offered with long and short-term installations as case studies.
