Course Description:
SPN2160, Spanish for Health Professionals, is a 3-credit course
geared toward individuals working or majoring in health-related areas.
The course focuses on the vocabulary needed for the workplace, the grammar
to complete the basic skills sequence, and task-based practical skills.
Students will fill out medical forms, read medical brochures, write letters,
conduct interviews, etc. A knowledge of basic Spanish is a prerequisite
the course.
Required Course Materials:
Spanish for Medical Personal, Jarvis and Lebredo, published by
D.C. Heath (Houghton-Mifflin)
Basic Spanish Grammar, Jarvis, Lebredo, & Mena-Ayllón
It is highly recommended that the student also purchase a good English-Spanish
medical dictionary.
Objectives:
In this course you will expand your knowledge of skills needed to function
in Spanish at an intermediate level in the workplace. These include the
skills of understanding spoken Spanish in a work environment, speaking
skills for the work environment, reading medically-related materials, and
writing appropriately for the work environment. Students will also be able
to demonstrate awareness of the basic grammatical concepts that complete
the Spanish grammar skills sequence.
Attendance:
In order for you to meet these objectives it will be necessary for you to attend class and language lab when they meet. Class meets 2 days per week for 1 and ½ hours per session. You will be allowed up to 2 class sessions (3 hours) with no questions asked. Students are responsible for making up all work missed during absences. Students may not make up graded work for unexcused absences. Excused absences are the following: participation in a scheduled event as a member of a university-sponsored athletic/scholastic team (official absence form required); religious holidays; accident or illness (accident report or FSU health center/doctor's note required); or a death in the immediate family.
*Each unexcused absence after the first three will reduce the final grade number - to be calculated on a scale of 100% - by two (2) percentage points.
*Excuses for absences must be submitted within two weeks of the
time of return.
Disabled Students:
Students with disabilities needing academic accommodations should register
with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center
(SDRC) and bring a letter to the instructor from the SDRC indicating a
need for academic accommodations. This should be done the first week
of classes. This syllabus and other course materials are available
in alternative format upon request.
