The Spanish Division of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics
would like to welcome you to Elementary Spanish I (SPN1120). SPN 1120 is
the first of a three-semester sequence of courses (SPN 1120, SPN 1121,
and SPN 2200), that, when completed, fulfills the language requirement
in arts and sciences. It is designed for students with little or
no prior knowledge of Spanish. The course emphasizes the communicative
skills of listening and speaking within cultural contexts, the reading
of authentic materials, and the writing of short compositions in order
to enable students to function at a survival level within the culture.
Traditional
1120 Classes

Meet four times per week with their instructor

Meet one day per week in language lab, using audio and videotapes
to practice skills

CAI (Computer Assisted Instruction) Classes

Meet three times per week with their instructor

Meet one day per week in language lab, using audio and videotapes
to practice skills
Additionally, meet one time per week in the computer
lab, where skill practice consists of activities with a grammar software
module, a CD Rom, email, chat rooms, and Internet activities
