Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics Russian Division

Undergraduate Programs in Slavic Studies

Language

The completion of RUS 2220 or the equivalent is required for students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, with a major in other areas of the College of Arts and Sciences and with selected majors in other colleges. Students can fulfill this requirement by taking RUS 1120-1121 (4 hours each) and RUS 2220 (4 hours).

Exemption and Placement

A student who has taken any college-level Russian at another institution must continue the sequence at Florida State University at the nearest equivalent level through RUS 2220, to fulfill the language requirement.

After one year or less of Russian in high school, the student is advised to enter RUS 1120. After two years of study, the student is advised to enter RUS 1121. After completing three years, the student may take a course at the 2000 level or above. If the student received a grade of "C" or below in the last high school course of if the last course was two or more years ago, the student is advised to begin the sequence one level lower.

Note: Native speakers may be exempt from the language requirement. However, no university credit is awarded for courses exempted by this method. Contact Mary LePoer at (850) 644-2606 for more information.

The Slavic Minor Program

Russian: Twelve (12) semester hours in courses numbered above 1999 are required for the Russian minor. Credit earned in meeting the foreign language requirement for graduation may not be used in satisfying the minor.

Upon request, an official certificate will be issued by the Modern Languages Undergraduate Office certifying completion of the minor requirements. Go to room 364 Diffenbaugh to apply for this certificate.
